Just curious - What do you do with your male chicks?

this has been really useful as I am just getting ready to give my silkie her first eggs - my children are only small but before I agreed to let her have eggs the boys have had to be told every day that girls are for laying and boys eating, they have finally taken this in! Just out of curiosity...

    Coop is finished:)

I had a silkie that just wouldnt go to bed - she used to sit on the top rung of the ramp but wouldnt go through the pop hole. I put her up and under every night for a week through the hole - to my surprise on day 8 she managed it herself. I did all the questioning, like ramp height, ramp...

run floor "grass cuttings" - need a quick answer please

Fab, thanks everyone I gave it a go and was like a "hen party" they loved it!!! I have let them out a few times now as well so I dont feel so mean at them been couped up. As I style my garden I think I might have to try the chicken salad bars I have looked at on here.

silkies, leghorns and pekin bantums and egg laying

blinking heck, that will teach me to go style over substance (but they are so beautiful) - Not sure what the leghorns excuse is, she was laying before I had her!!!! Thinking when I expand that maybe some bluebells or ambers. Would like a good layer that lays blue or green eggs (do they...

    Silkies...high maintenance?

I have a single silkie in a flock of 6 with 2 pekin bantums, 2 warrens and a bantum leghorn. When they first arrived the silkie made all efforts to be the top of the pecking order but has now been put in her place. She lives quite happily in the roost with all the others but generally goes...

Okay now. Pecky the silkie and her friends arrived 4 weeks ago. She was allegedly slightly older than POL but had stopped for the winter. Since arrival no eggs. When should Pecky start laying??? I wasnt expecting anything great 2 maybe 3 a week. Please tell me she should start laying soon...

Do silkies need a special walk-up??

I have a silkie and the first week of having her she used to sit at the bottom of the ladder at night and huddle down for the night, it was a bit of a nightmare as I have a base entry into the coup which is right at the back and the coupe is only 2.5' off the floor so rain or shine I got on all...

run floor "grass cuttings" - need a quick answer please

Hi can anyone tell me, I have bark chips on the floor of my coop but they are about ready for a top up and my local places are out at the minute. I am still proofing my garden so the girls cant range free (only 2 are allowed out at the minute as the rest all vanish into neighbouring gardens...

I have had 6 little ladies for 4 weeks now and one (dont know who) has been performing nicely giving me roughly 2 eggs every 3 days. This morning was chuffed to bits to find a second egg. Not sure why but it was at the bottom of the coup stairs!!!!! Maybe she wanted to show it off Come on...

need to get a bigger house shed conversion ideas

Cheers for that the shed is about 1m x 2m and 2m high apex roof. I would have to put a pop hole in as I think I would have problems otherwise. I live in England and our weather is at best changeable. We get lots of rain throughout the year, We had what we consider to be a bad winter with...

Am I poorly????? Or is this normal

Thank you everyone for your advice. I went back to the farmer I had flappy off as I had seen her roaming and she was fine on the farm. He had one other with a comb the same (an orpington) he says he is confident this has been sustained during a pecking battle and that it is a bit of bruising...
