I attached photos of our current situation. I am trying to put a predator-proof fence around the chickens and coop, but that gets back to the original post where I have chickens jumping over and groundhogs tunneling under because now they are trapped inside. I left one opening at the bottom for...
Hard to give you a good picture of the setup. We use an old milking barn, the yellow shed, as the coop. The chickens have been free range for 11 years, so we never put a fence around it, and the coop is secure enough to keep out everything but rats. It is in an open area, but the weeds, mostly...
I have also thought of electric poultry fencing. Do you know if it is truly fox-proof? I have not yet read of anyone saying a fox had gotten through, but I wasn't really searching for that.
The other issue with it is that my chickens already can jump 6' fencing...the electric netting is only 4'...
No age, still attached to the shell. Maybe out there an hour or 2?
Poor little thing died overnight. I think it may have been injured by the hen when she kicked it out of the nest. There was more blood in the shell than what is in the photo.
I have read a good number of posts on here regarding foxes and other predators, but I could still use some advice. We have have had free-ranging chickens here in upstate NY for about 10 years. We have lost some to predators over time, but nothing like this. I love that we have a variety of...
Not sure how long this poor chick was out there. It is still alive, but obviously not ready to hatch out. I tried putting it back close to mom, but she pecked at it and tried to push it away.
I don't have an incubator. Is there anything I can do to save it?
I was going to try Vaseline, but now that I have read this I am thinking it may do more harm than good. Both of my roosters have frostbite on their combs. And they are shaking their heads trying to relieve it somehow, so thinking it might be painful. Anything you can do after the frostbite is...
I can't get a better pic, and haven't tried to pick him up yet, I was just wondering if anyone has an idea as to what these bumps on one side of his comb might be. They look like small shiny beetles, but he won't let me get close enough. All my chickens are free range, none of the others have...
I have had dairy goats for about 7 years now. I know that they play, and also establish dominance, by head-butting. But I have never seen it go on as long as these 2, and never seen 2 of them bleeding and still furiously butting each other. I did just go out there and check on them. They're...
Thank you. That sounds like good advice. My husband did separate them, but as soon as he put them back together they started again, so we thought it better to just let them go. I can't watch. But I will post later with results.
We have 13 adult goats in 2 large barn/pen areas and just recently 12 kids added. Everything was fine until today when the oldest doe started a head-butting battle with one of the others. Both have bloody heads. This has been going on for about an hour. Should I stop them? Or wait for them to...
