    Raising Chicks

Sex link is a solid color male breed over a barred female. For example, a RIR or Australorp rooster over a Barred Rock female. The males hatch with a dot on their heads. Autosexing is a purebred with the feature that the males and females are identifiable by their coloring at hatch. Like Cream...

Selling chicks, best way to run it, and get the word out?

If all you want are chicks then this is a good plan. Just keep in mind that there are costs to hatching chicks like electricity and your time. This might be fun to do once, but regularly might get a little burdensome. Maybe your friend could pay you back by giving you some processed ones for...

    Looking for beautiful Breeds

Cream Legbars. They have big combs so are good for warm climates. I have them in Upstate NY, so they are cold tolerant as well. My roo did get frostbite on his comb a couple years ago when we had a polar vortex.

Multiple Medications at the Same Time?

Hello, I've had chickens for many years so am not new to this, but I have come across a new situation and I'm hoping someone else will be able to help. My chickens have always been extremely healthy and I haven't had to deal with many health issues... until now! Anytime a chicken has acted...

I crossed a cream legbar with a ----- and this is what I got

Love this thread. Even though it’s older it’s been very informative. I have a White Sport Cream Legbar roo and a few different hens I hatched eggs from. The chicks from a White Leghorn are either white or look exactly like a Cream Legbar. They’re 2 months old and I think the white ones are boys...

    Thin thin thin shells.

I have a one year old Cream Legbar who has always laid really thin shells that break open. I’ve isolated her and gave her a “special” diet, but I wasn’t able to get her to eat Tums. I’ve looked her over and no signs of mites or lice and had a fecal test done by my dogs vet. They get layer feed...

    Show me your poop boards!

That’s a great idea. Do you compost it box and all?

    Show me your poop boards!

I like your setup and it’s very similar to mine. I noticed you have litter on the floor - do you keep it there year round? I have a thick layer of pine shavings on the floor over the winter to add some insulation, but usually clear it out in the spring. I was considering leaving a layer to...

Comment by 'libbie' in article 'Nest Boxes; why do we make a sitting hens job so difficult?'

Interesting article. I wonder how putting a thick layer of construction sand (the same kind people put on the floors of their coops) in the nest box would work?

Comment by 'libbie' in article 'The Definite Guide To Roosters'

This is the 2nd article I’ve read about not letting kids be around roosters unattended and I’m looking for advice...I have two young children ages 5 and 8. My flock free ranges all day on 16 acres and my children play in the yard not far from the coop. Is having a rooster just not a good idea...

Comment by 'libbie' in article 'Dealing With Roosters Roo Behavior'

Looking for advice... Point number 1 in the article states: “A small child could be perceived as a threat in a rooster's eyes even if you and I know the child never intends to harm anything. By placing a child in this situation you are provoking the rooster to attack, and you would only have...

What happens if you breed two black sex links?

Great information - very informative! Any chance you could do the same breakdown for two red sexlinks? ISA brown hens under a red sexlink roo?
