I love your coop design, Brookliner. I have some corrugated metal I was going to use for something similar for my ducks. When it snowed that much, I had to go dump the snow off their run to avoid collapse. :(
Did you build them from plans?
I'm still debating whether to make a really solid...
No frostbite problems in my coop yet this year. *knocks on wood*. I think my rooster built up some tolerance after last winter. He won't let me near him, so I can really help much. :(
I looked around a bit...Anyone know if it's possible to fence part of the pond in as part of their run? I'd like them to be safe AND get to go in the pond. I'll post some pictures later.
I just got 4 Pekin Ducks from a family who wasn't able to keep them any more. They pretty much pets, although they did collect the eggs (I haven't seen any eggs yet). They gave me the dog kennel and hut that served as housing for them, and it doesn't seem quite right, but seems to be working for...
I'm down to one of the Black Sex-Links, due to racoons/foxes/fischers. :'(
Here she is with her first egg.
Here she is with her new overprotective Rooster friend:
I called my husband from the chicken coop - if I am going to suffer this absurdity, you should probably take a picture. This is why I don't get dressed for work until after the chickens are fed. :-p
And this was last week, it's worse now.
When I went out to the coop this morning, my poor rooster's comb was bleeding, I'm guessing it's frostbite (and probably what happened before). I'm not sure how to help him, since he won't let me near him. What can I do to help him? I've read to use Vaseline on the comb, but that's not something...
Yesterday morning I saw this grizzly sight on the feeder in my coop. Looks like some chicken got blood(?) on it's beak and was trying to wipe it off. I didn't see any blood on any of the chickens and they seem fine. Any ideas what might have happened? Anything I should look out for?
Brr...it's been cold. I haven't added any light to my coop this winter - it seems like it would just stress my hens out, since only one of four is laying. Or was laying, until a few days ago. It this normal without supplemental light? When do they usually start again? Not sure if I should start...
Piglett, is that this bucket heater?

I ordered it, but some of the reviews seem to imply that it doesn't turn on an off with the temperature properly. Any problems?
Anyone know a good source for buckets around...
I bought the stuff, I think I can do it. I was looking at more complex designs, the bucket thing seems pretty straightforward. How high does it need to be off the ground for the chickens to reach? My roo is pretty big.
Can you buy a waterer with nipples or do you have to make one? I want to do this, because I cannot carry water without drenching myself - but I'm very chicken with DIY projects.
