I don’t like culling either, I also dont eat meat, but the broom method is the easiest for me, my hands shake too much for a hatchet. I pull hard enough to pull the head off, I want to make sure the chicken is dead, after that just walk away for a bit as the chicken will move like crazy.
i did trim the rear feathers really short, im trying to watch for fly strike, but so far been lucky. Its in the 60-70's here.
No the two year olds havent slowed down on laying since they started at like 9 months, while the other two siblings molted this spring. well they didnt grow any new ones...
so your birds were free range, indoor birds? they dont look too old?
there is a small egg producing farm that free ranges his birds. used to be cow fields, but he bought it and fenced it in better and moves the trailer around for the hens and lgd's, he sells them on the 2nd year for like $10...
3-4 year old cream legbar with what i think is water belly, she has had it since this spring and still eating and being boss. She lays bantam size eggs 5 days a week. i clean her rear once a week since its so yukky but try not to pick her up much since its got to be uncomfortable.

the lady i bought the eggs from suggested adding the heat lamp, it is for reptiles not those huge bulbs at the feed store. this was when they were young, they dont have heat anymore after they started not hanging under it.and when they stopped going under the heat plate i turned that off too...
so my fun project is not fun anymore.
I ordered alot of eggs and only had a dozen and a half hatch( iwas hoping for a 50% hatch rate due to be shipped). then the chicks kept dieing. Im not sure from what. I bought turkey starter with the proper protein, but i didnt grind it. As it seems to be...
thinking of getting a sweeter heater. Does it work well for raising chicks/quail? i have a brinsea and i raise in the house but i think it wasnt warm enough? i really dont want to use a heat lamp 24/7. What size do you have? debating on the 11x16 or the 11x30. $25 difference and the first is...
