I had a similar problem today. I picked up an order of 37 chicks from the post office this morning (ordered from Ideal) and by the time I got them in the brooder 36 were still alive. An hour later one more chick died. This evening two are just laying under the heat lamp and letting the others...
Of 13 eggs, I had 10 hatch today!
Chick number 11 hatched this evening but his yolk is not completely absorbed (about the size of a kidney bean). What are his chances of survival? I moved the others to the brooder so they would stop pecking at the yolk. Is there anything else I should do for...
I'm placing my eggs into lockdown tonight! I'm so excited. When I turned them this morning a couple of them were wobbling on their own! Yay!
My incubator says to open the second air vent during lockdown and as this is my first use, I don't know what that will do to the temperature.
Anybody have...
So far it looks like all 13 of mine are going strong, though in the darker shelled eggs all I can see when I candle is the air sac, but that's a good sign! I even saw one move when I candled! That was so exciting! Just 6 days to go for my little chicks to hatch...I'd better start thinking about...

We in western Washington are in the midst of a snow and ice storm. My yard has a foot of snow on the ground which is highly unusual for my area. The snow has been accumulating for a couple of days now and I've noticed that there aren't any chicken footprints leading to the chicken's...
I've never heard of this but I am intrigued at the concept. The hen will leave the eggs periodically to eat, drink and eliminate waste and this brief cooling isn't harmful to her clutch of eggs. Perhaps the Brinsea company has picked up on this. I wonder if it actually increases hatch rate...
@ Snooptwomey - I tried using the strongest flashlight I had and shining the light through a small hole in a cardboard box. I think *maybe* I could see the air cell in the EE eggs that I have. I certainly couldn't see the amount of detail I would in a white egg. It could just be wishful...
Hey! I'll join you in your hatch-a-long! I set 13 eggs on 1/7, due to hatch 1/28. I candled a few days ago and the lighter shelled ones looked great! Many of the shells are too dark for me to see anything so that'll be a surprise for me. Does anybody have any hints on candling darker shelled...
