Yes, I looked at the sand. That's why I'm (pleasantly) amazed!
I also understand the concept of the poo getting washed down into the tiny gaps between the sand when it rains. But I've always just felt like after a few years, isn't it inevitable that all those gaps will be full? Because...
(I see you said that there is no poop... but where does it go??) I mean, there must be some amount of time after which it becomes mud-sand? I am amazed!
so, Ive always wondered: what about all the poop? If you don't rake it out like cat litter every day or two (or do you?), doesnt the sand just turn into mud after about a year anyway, with a bunch of birds in there?
Our run is only a few feet tall, and has hardware cloth on top, like just discussed above. After one year with rain and snow, we got two of those alphalt 4x8 panels to lay on top of it, which is good for summer shading, but in winter it gets kinda dark, plus in winter they're not free ranging...
Im in Wisconsin. My run sounds similar to yours - its 8x8 outdoor and hardware cloth with dirt floor. I have left the dirt as-is in the winter, but I also built a couple simple wooden perches that sit outside -that way they can still be outside (which they prefer unless it is really windy or...
I wouldnt start to worry unless it keeps up for more than a few days. I've had soft eggs now and then (often a couple in a row when it happens) but so far, for me, they've always solved themselves. Sometimes I think its some sort of stressor that causes it (weather, other birds, feed...
So far my most friendly was my Buff Orpington Scarlet. Here she is jumping up into the hammock to bug me while I was reading. She'd always come sit with (on) me if I'm outside to see what was going on (and eat crumbs off my shirt). I have another buff who is very skittish though, we can't...
Right on, she has us figured out! Yeah, she's our only one left from the original 3 we had. I guess Im just concerned that if I avoid orps (a breed I like otherwise) that the next breed will just pick up where she left off. Ive read other threads complaining about EE being loud, but mine...
Unless we let our chickens out of their run and into the yard, the buff orpington complains loudly from dawn til dusk, and is risking the soup pot via the man of the house. The red star whines a bit too, but its a higher pitch moan and less of a yelling chicken noise. The easter eggers are...
Ive got a red tailed that just moved into the neighborhood and am a little worried too. I am always home when I let the girls out, but am not out with them. I am somewhat comforted by the fact that I only know there's a hawk around because they notify me of it! They go into defense clucking...
Yeah, My first set of chickens all laid brown eggs :) Then we got two easter eggers, one who lays the peachy light ones, and one who lays the light green. It is fun looking in the basket, its like easter every day
Yeah, I think they were scratching at that egg with the mis-formed coating...
We got a variety one week. A smallish brown egg, then a funny little olive size egg that came out a different color (bottom center)
and a weird one where the colored coating was coming off:
don't know what caused this one, but it stopped after a few days.
Mine LOVE citronella candles. I have to hide them, or they get whittled down pretty fast by 4 beaks. My buff particularly likes it.
Ive also gotten pecked in the tooth, not too long after feeding them corn which they love (no my teeth are not that yellow :)
