It's 9 degrees Celsius here in North Wales and the rain has actually stopped! Chickens and turkeys enjoying the dry weather, goose doesn't care and the pigeons seem a little cross (they loved showering in the rain. It's great to watch as they lift one wing and lean over to get maximum feather...
I live in North Wales and although the winters here can be pretty cold I don't heat my loft. They have a wooden loft (18mm thick shiplap exterior boards) perspex window and ventilation, but however cold it has been (minus 15 a few times) they have all been fine and when I open the loft I can...
I have kept racing pigeons for several years and I have never culled. I have a mix of busschearts and van reets and after not breeding for two years I am looking forward to starting breeding again next year. Some birds do well as young bird racers and less well as mature birds, others do less...
It only shows when the light catches it, from some angles it doesn't show much at all and his head looks dark brown with just a slight blue sheen, but from angles he looks like he has been dying his hair!
That's the plan! He sometimes raises the feathers on the back of his head sometimes and then they really catch the light! We are hoping that it is a trait he will pass on.
Here are the photos, it is a blue iridescent sheen on the head feathers, from some angles it doesn't show, but he has had it ever since she first got him when he was six weeks old.
Definitely give him extra protein and lots of fresh veg, mites can really weaken a bird, particularly turkeys who can be quite delicate despite their great size. Is he wheezing and does he have any nasal discharge?
I don't know about weasels, but I have three turkeys and they do kill rats. Although I am super careful about not leaving food out and keeping everything very clean, I live near a river in a rural village and do get the odd rat turning up. I used to trap them, but since I have had the turkeys on...
Hi everyone
I am posting on behalf of my daughter (age 8).
She started keeping Coturnix quail this year (She has been interested in them for a couple of years and the other half and I decided that she is both ready and serious so we helped her get started)
We bought a group of four quail, one...
It is a sad morning. Yesterday we noticed that Clara the blue partridge brahma was oddly quiet. We brought her in last night and made her comfortable, she had good colour and no obvious symptoms beyond a slight wheeze and just sitting quietly. We were hoping it was a cold and she would be...
Hi all, after losing four ducks to predators we put up new fencing along the path side of the garden (the vulnerable side) and a new lockable gate into the area. As we had already built new housing (also predator proof) we decided to sort out the floor and the long standing drainage problem. The...
Hi all, I used to visit this forum a lot, but have been away for a long time. Lots has happened both in our flock and personal lives. The other half was made redundant but thankfully has a new job now. We are renovating the house. Our daughter is five now and I am about to start training as a...
