Pasty butt usually appears in the first couple of weeks. You have to get it off and keep checking for it. Otherwise the vent will get clogged and the chick will die.
I grind up oatmeal, the regular old fashion oats, and add it to their feed. This helps keep pasty butt from happening. I keep a...
I have 2 of the 1266 bators. One still has the 2 wafers for thermostats and the other I replaced the wafer with an electronic thermostat. I see in the pic what looks to be the thermostat as a large white box. I am not familiar with it so I am not sure what you mean when you say there is no more...
Oh, this is my brooder barn, as I call it, that we just recently remodeled. It all started over a year ago when I turned my 12 by 16 greenhouse into a place to hatch chicks. We put up walls and lots of insulation. Blew in 30 inches of insulation in the attic, 3 windows and a window in the door...
Oh my...I sure don't want that to happen. I also have been very careful to mark the eggs and trays with breed. I will make fences before I move the eggs on Thursday.
Thanks. Those are sure some cute chicks.
Thanks Lanae. Now do these covers fit high enough for the chicks to have head room? I cranked up the hatcher Saturday morning and so far it is keeping perfect temp and humidity. I will move my eggs from my incubators to the hatcher on Thursday, March 1. Can't wait.
Oh girl, I have been there. Just 2 weeks ago to be exact. I had 2 hens go broody and I let them set on the eggs in the chicken coop for a week. I then moved each hen with her eggs, picking up the entire nest box, into their own coop.
One hen stayed on her eggs just fine. The other I found the...
I just got a used Dickey's hatcher. I have 2 GQF cabinet incubators and am very excited to get this hatcher. It seems to be in good working order. I just cranked it up last night. The only problem I can see is that the trays did not have the covers for them. I know the chicks can't fall out...
In your picture, it appears that you are hatching your eggs in the green trays. Is that indeed what you are doing. Do they hatch OK that way. I am new to this and have always taken the eggs out of the green trays and layed them down in the hatching tray.
Thanks
Oh, I go to Dollar General and buy the mattress pad protectors which are made like the dog training pee pads only they are bigger, thicker, and les expensive.
I think it will be fine. You are right in that they outgrow the plastic tubs quickly. However since you will only have 6 chicks, they can probably stay in the tub for maybe 3 weeks. I screwed a wood frame on the inside of my lids and cut away the plastic, then attached hardware cloth to the wood...
