Are my chickens REALLY dying of old age?

This does make me feel quite a bit better. The batch these 2 came from also seemed to be weaker in general, as most of them needed some TLC to survive as chicks, and several were runts. I will look into a necropsy just to be sure that’s what’s happening, and do a full health check of all my...

Are my chickens REALLY dying of old age?

I have a flock of hens from 3 different batches. The oldest are 6 years old, the middle are 4, and the youngest are 2. Recently we’ve had 2 hens from the oldest batch pass away, and I’m not sure why. I’ve seen elderly hens die before, and we lost one earlier this year who was nearly 7. She...

    Runt? Bantam? FTT?

I don’t believe she’s laying age. Her hatch mate also died by a predator a couple weeks ago, so I have nothing to compare her to. The batch we got about 2 months before her just started laying within the last month, so I’d say we have a few weeks to go. I don’t think she has dwarfism unless it’s...

    Runt? Bantam? FTT?

Full development yes, size no. She has all her feathers and the proportions of a normal hen; just about a third smaller!

    Bantam or underdeveloped?

I got this chick free from a feed store who was planning on culling her due to her inability to walk. I fixed her splay legs and she ended up regaining her ability to walk/started growing after much TLC. She’s always been a very slow grower, considerably smaller than her sister from the same...

    Little runty is still kickin!

We keep joking that if he survives to maturity, the ladies are gonna be more in control than him. His sister is super defensive and pecks the heck out of anyone who tries to pick him up, so we call him our “wussy rooster”. Lovingly of course. :lau

    Little runty is still kickin!

I’m not seeing the average dwarfism traits in him, his skull isn’t sloped and angled down at the eyes, and his legs are normal length for his size. I noticed dwarf chicks look “cute” if that makes sense, small heads and big eyes, short legs, wider necks. Who knows, maybe it’s a form of it! Hope...

    Little runty is still kickin!

About 2 months ago I posted about my runt chick, Legs, who was nearly 1/4 of the size of his sister and refused to grow. 2 months later he’s still small, but healthy and strong it seems! His poops are definitely the size of a full grown hen, I’ll tell you that… I’ve tried everything...

5 week old “fun size” chick!

I hope so too! I don’t believe she’s a bantam since she isn’t feathering as fast either, and to my knowledge bantams feather at the same rate, they’re just smaller.

What should the heat be at for my runt?

As posted about before, my 5 week runt is getting some feathers in and her sister is no longer in need of a heat lamp. (95° summer days and nights don’t drop below 60°) right now they’ve been in a brooder on our indoor porch where we don’t have AC or heat, so the outdoor temps are felt...

    Found Chicks Alone

Chicks are rarely left alone with no mother in sight. Unfortunately the hen was probably killed. You’ll need a brooder with a heat lamp or plate since newly hatched chicks require 95° temps that simply huddling can’t provide. Farm stores, sometimes even pet stores, sell chick starter feed that’s...

5 week old “fun size” chick!

She’s eating plenty, she’s not skinny by any means, just small. Hoping she has a long tiny chicken life either way. I’ve had FTT chicks before and they’ve always died within the first 2 weeks, but who knows.

5 week old “fun size” chick!

Anyone else have experience with a chick that was runted to this degree? She’s perfectly healthy otherwise, eats and drinks, poops fine, is cold tolerant as much as a regular 5 week hen, she’s just small!

    Chick constantly peeping!!

The internal temp of the brooder is about 90°F with ample space on the other side to get away from the heat if needed. (Mostly for the larger chick who needs less heat now) she tends to chill under the lamp so she’s not too hot, and I don’t see any reason she’d be too cold especially at this age...
