Bullying in the Coop (Pack behavior in chickens?)

So... I had a lot of changes to spring on my chickens (integrate younger chicks with older ones, upgrade the coop, and move) so I opted to do them all at once. All seemingly went well. I moved my six young chicks to the new house and their new coop first. About a week later came my three older...

Pullet lays three eggs right into my hand...

:) She's been acting fine since then so I am very hopeful. The pullets are sleeping in their juvenile crate (a long story probably worthy of another thread) in which I found two more eggs this morning (in different corners). Not sure who all in there is laying, but they are starting to lay. Most...

Pullet lays three eggs right into my hand...

Yesterday I found the first egg, or should I say eggshell from my babes. (They are 18 weeks old.) Imagine my surprise when I was putting the girls to bed tonight. One laid three eggs right onto my hand, one a tiny hard shell, one stightly bigger soft shell, and another soft that broke...

Breeds of my Tractor Supply Red Pullets?

My best layer came from TSC last spring, also a red sex link. So I am very excited to have a few more of her type. Despite being my smallest hen, she lays a huge dark brown almost globe-shaped egg (barely fit in a jumbo carton) nearly every day occasional lays a super-sized double yolker. She is...

    Molting, I guess...

OK, so it definitely looks like Betty is molting. Her normally beautiful fluffy creamy buff brahma butt is looking a little thin and gray... The feather in the run look like hers. Amazing how many feathers can come out of one still living chicken's back end. Not sure what Bunny and Carly's...

Breeds of my Tractor Supply Red Pullets?

Thanks! It will interesting to see if the differences remain as they mature. I recently gave them all names and have been using mostly their markings to tell them apart.

Breeds of my Tractor Supply Red Pullets?

My six TSC "assorted red pullets" are almost about six weeks old. Accepting that they might by all be crosses, I do seem to have three distinct different types among them. Thoughts? Two look a lot like my red sex link/comet did at this age but lighter, they are quite a bit bigger than the...

    Molting, I guess...

A couple weeks ago my egg production dropped from about 3-4 eggs per day from my flock of four 14-month old hens, to 1-2 eggs per day. And for the past week 0-1 egg per day with only one chicken laying, my red sex link, Lil' Red. The Australorp and two Brahmas seemed to have stopped laying...

Betty the Big Buff Brahma is Broody

I wanted to follow up on Betty just in case anyone else finds this helpful. Betty sat in the suspended broody cage in my spare room this winter for two whole weeks. Eating and drinking almost nothing and sitting up on a roost like a statue all puffed up and moody, no improvement whatsoever! I...

Betty the Big Buff Brahma is Broody

One day in the broody cage: she spent the night on the roost in there. I actually took her down this morning and moved her closer to her food. She has not eaten or drank since I put her in there, not sure if its the broodiness or dramatic change of scenery for that. She is still acting pretty...

Betty the Big Buff Brahma is Broody

Excuse the title, but I could not resist the alliteration. So her we are in the middle of winter with a major Nor'ester coming and my biggest brahma girl is in the midst of a broody spell. Since we're rooster-less, I was hoping that it would pass if I kept taking her out of the nest box, but...

    Henrietta is under the weather...

Thanks for the links. Argh!!! I am so frustrated!!! Hen has now taken over the bathroom where she has access to several types of food, water, electrolytes, heat and lots of places to rest or cuddle up. She is neither improving nor declining. She does not want to eat or drink on her own. I have...

    Henrietta is under the weather...

Well, Henrietta made it through the night. She is about the same, very mellow and no appetite. I took her out of the crate this morning, couldn't get her to eat more than a bite of scrambled egg. There was absolutely no poop in the crate, but she did give a little poop after climbing up on the...

    Henrietta is under the weather...

So I scrambled up an egg, plopped her on my lap, and hand fed her the egg. Took her a little while to respond but eventually she ate up most of it. She seems to have perked up a bit and is even eating some of her regular crumbles in the kennel now. I am sure that she's not out of the woods yet...
