@tori729 Who was your vet who performed this? I lost a hen to crop stasis (she developed every single molt) and when the vet did a basic necropsy, she couldn't find anything abnormal.
I asked my rehabber friend to take her, as her crop was not moving and she was getting dehydrated. One morning, she found her dead. She thinks she aspirated. I asked my friend to take her because she would be able to euthanize her, but since my hen still looked interested in eating she kept...
My vet told me I have to give nystatin 4x day! Fragile is an understatement. Shortly after that, I found another favorite dead in the coop. I had even dewormed earlier! That was the first hen I have ever found dead (besides the 12 that were killed by coyotes -- my little boy found them all...
@Apags18 I just want to let you know I wrestled with that question with my hen (a favorite) with sour crop. The first time she had crop stasis was when she was molting. We paid over $1000 for crop surgery and she was placed on Bactrim/meloxicam. She recovered, but I had to put over 2 months...
What happened to your hen? I had a hen like this and her GI system would completely shut down with each molt. The second time, she didn't make it and when my friend who does rehab did a basic necropsy, she could not find anything unusual except for a lot of fat. Her fecal did show capillaria...
Just curious about Aquasol vs. Safeguard liquid goat wormer. Some people say that chickens cannot absorb the safeguard as well, since it is in a suspension, thus the higher dose. Valbazen as the liquid is on backorder indefinitely, unless pills can work/
@Wyorp Rock I cannot seem to find Valbazen liquid, it is back-ordered everywhere. It is made in China I believe. What would you suggest for Capillaria. They do make Valbazen tablets, I wonder if I could calculate the dose and break the tablets.
@dawg53 I just had a favorite hen die of Capillaria (most likely -- she had crop stasis) -- how do you treat with Valbazen (for how many days, then repeat? I read on one of your earlier posts that it is best to treat more often to break the cycle? My flock free ranges on 1/8 acre and they poop...
@Wyorp Rock Have you had hens have crop stasis during a molt. My 5 yo EE recently had this. In fact, the same time last year I had to have crop surgery and this year same time, her gut stopped moving food. The vet prescribed antibiotics, fenbendazole (she had Capillaria in her droppings)...
I think there is a correlation. I have a favorite hen who just past away from this. Last year we spent over $1000 on crop surgery for her. The thought was that she had a gizzard impaction. It was so sad watching her try to eat grit and drink water to clear it on her own. The crop stasis...
I have 2 LGDs that keep my free-roaming girls safe, but my girls constantly have worms (roundworms, hairworms, cecal worms) -- one of my neighbors keeps her hens penned and all her hens live twice as long as mine. I wonder if they just simply have less parasites from wild birds or insects.
