I've introduced two different batches of chicks this spring, and the ones that were in the brooder together are definitely buddies and stick together, even after 6 months. But we have a big mix of breeds, so I can't really test the birds of a feather flock together by breed or color theory...
I am trying to take pictures of my feed store SLW chick every week or so to try to determine if she is getting more white and more lacing as her grown up feathers come in. Here are some pics at 12 weeks. This is the same chick that is in the photos in the post above.

Here are some pics of my SLW. She is a feed store chick. Her lacing is odd - black feathers rimmed with white rather than white rimmed with black...

My Blue Marans is just over 20 weeks. From reading this thread, it sounds like we easily have another month or two to go before we can expect eggs from her. I can't wait!
My SLW chick has the same reverse lacing. Are your chicks from a hatchery? Ours is, and I have heard that lots of SLW chicks are coming out of hatcheries this season not having great lacing.
I am hoping our girl might get some more white and lacing as she gets her big girl feathers in, but I...
These pullets are all supposed to be EEs. They are all 4 weeks old now. The one on the far right has me puzzled, though, because although she is the same age and size as the others, she is about 2 weeks behind her sisters in feathering out. Is she really an EE? Almost looks to me like a...
I also got an chick from the SLW bin at a Tractor Supply Store this spring. She is turning out to have a lot of black on her, and has white rimmed feathers on her breast instead of black lacing. I have heard that hatchery SLWs are rather poor quality these days.
This girl is appreciated and...
I had posted earlier about wondering if my chick was a roo or pullet at about 7-8 weeks of age. Her comb and wattles are small, and I am pretty sure that she does NOT look anything like a rooster. However, she still puzzles me with her vocalizations. She sure makes a noise like she is trying to...
We are fostering 6 EEs - they are about 2 weeks old now. Since the temps have been in the low 70s during the day, I have just started letting them outside during the day in a small protected area, and have taken the heat lamp away in the indoor brooder box. I will plan to move them to an...
I have a 12 week old Bule Marans chick. It is my only Marans, so I don't have any others to compare to. The comb is quite small and not red, but I hear the chick make strange growling, creaking sounds sometimes, which make me worried that it may be trying to crow. Any guesses here?

I have heard that one way to train them to the coop is to pen them inside the coop for a couple of days, especially when they are young. That teaches them that the coop is home.
Niks11, so sorry to hear that. Do you think a predator got in, or could your chicken possibly have gotten scraped on something? From what you said, it doesn't sound like it was just from other chickens pecking at his neck, is that right.
Again, I am really sorry to hear that.
