The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

I was wondering the same thing. It looks like the top one has a straight comb.
I've noticed that a lot of hatchery SLW have straight combs, over half of the ones i purchased had them.

You can see the guy in the front has a big straight comb.

I don't know what a straight comb is, however a single comb is a DQ for SLW's. You cannot show them and you should not breed a single comb SLW. It just puts more poor quality out there. Your SLW's should have a rose comb that is described in the APA SOP.

If they are not sex links then you won't be able to tell from the colors as chicks, whether they are male or female.

sorry, i meant single comb. And yes, obviously SLW aren't supposed to have single combs. But what does it matter if you're just using them for eggs?

You are correct, it doesn't matter if you are just eating their eggs. The proof is in the pudding because someone sold you your birds, but did not tell you that they are supposed to have a rose comb. That was the point I was trying to make, that is how we learn. Just love and enjoy them for what they are. Hatcheries have been screwing these birds up for years.

No, but they are listed as one of the birds that can be feather sexed.

Wyandottes can't be feather sexed because you need to breed toward fast feathering females and slow feathering males. They maybe doing this in hatcheries to make sexing easier but a wyandotte bred to the SOP you can not feather sex because the lack of breeding toward the feathering trait. It is a process that takes a lot of selective breeding and probably a few years to get the noticeable traits in males versus females.

If you got them for Meyer hatchery they will give you credit on your account for the single combed wyandottes. When I ordered some laying stock a few years ago I got some single combed and they were more than happy to refund me the money to use else where on their site. Very good customer service there.

I have 2, not show quality. But I see what you mean about the black around the lower neck:

Obviously one boy and one girl. We have our birds for the eggs. Well, I guess only the girls lay eggs. Yes I knew that.

For hatchery chicks that is actually a very nicely laced pullet compared to many I have been seeing. What hatchery did she come from?

^^^We are new to this, this spring. First time for chickens. We got our chickens from TSC and don't know where they source them. We bought ours in Planifield IN. We're just looking for eggs, and if the birds are lookers, then that's a bonus. I do need to look at her lacing, find the standard, and see how she compares.
