    Straw or hay for nest boxes- preference?

    Neither, IMO. Get plastic nest pads, available on Amazon. They serve the purpose (to protect the egg) and are easy to keep clean.

    Housing for my chicks until permanent coop is in place?

    It's a 30 x 24 x 24 wire cage, as recommended by the feed store. I'm guessing they can't be in this for too long.
