Yes your right. Actually I had no idea I was even on this section when I was posting it. When I received an email from them showing my post it said I was a new member and all that.I am not a new member I have been on here for awhile. But I am going to delete the post anyway. I have a couple...
I agree with you. Common sense is always best. Why treat for something if not needed. Thanks for your advice it's always nice to get good advice with raising chickens since this is my 1st time. Lori
Hi Maureen,
I have read alot of people are using food grade DE. I actually ordered some online and use it in the coop to keep away any bugs. I have not had any issues at all. It's safe and easy to use and just use some now & then. I think you might have been the person that mentioned you bought...
Yes I also read that onions are one of the things they shouldn't eat. If you do a search on what not to feed them, it's not a lot of stuff but important. Onions and potatoes are for sure not good.
Well I think your doing great and didn't blow it on the sand. It will be fine. Sounds like your doing just right with all the eggs your getting. I really enjoy our chickens they really make me laugh.Great pets.Ours our May & Sheila and they are BFF's. Nice chatting with you. Lori
Yeah I think it will be ok. Maybe you can mix in the coarse sand with it and even wet it a little bit to keep the dust down while mixing it. I think it's good to replace it after awhile. So when you do replace it just get the other type and it will be fine.I also have the pine shavings in their...
Well from what I read you need to use sand that is not real fine, like play sand, beach sand. We got ours at Lowes. It's builders sand. All sand has silica in it but this has the least amount. The fine sand can cause respiratory issues. The sand to use is more coarse and and it's washed sand.

We have used sand for awhile and it works great. Never had an issue with any bugs. I dust occasionally with food grade DE. I clean the coop out daily and it has stayed very clean all through the winter. We plan to rake it all out and replace it with fresh sand now that winter is over.
Of course...
Would it be safe enough to use one of these seedling mats under the wood shavings to keep my chickens warmer on very cold nights? I would cover it with the trash bags of course then cover with very deep shavings.
Heated water bowls are really quick and easy also. I ordered 21 from Walmart for 14.00 and they are great. They only heat if needed and only enough to keep it from freezing. My chickens always have plenty of fresh water and it easy to dump and refill everyday.
I bought a big heated water bowl and have it in the run area so don't have to worry about it being spilled in the bedding. They always have plenty of water. We just started putting a heat lamp just outside the door of where they sleep to take the edge off on really freezing nights. here in North...
We have a barred rock & a black australorp and the BA started laying a few weeks ago and she is still laying an egg every other day. There is snow on the ground today and we have had such freezing cold weather here in Post Falls, Id but it doesn't seem to bother her. She is such a good layer.I...
