Update:
Golden Girl died, the next day another hen died.
The remaining 10 are starting to come out of 'it'. They are walking and talking, and starting to follow me around the yard again, instead of just laying around and watching me.
Whatever it was, I think it's run its course.
I did give...
My black sex link hens (twelve in all, born Feb last year, great layers) are off their feed and lethargic and not laying anymore (only three eggs today) I tried to mix up some mash, and some of them rallied to eat it but the others just layed around and watched me throw it out. Then this...
We have 12 'girls' and would like to give them some warmth in their roost at night, but not fry them with 250 watt heat lamps.... We bought a black light that is suppose to be a night time heat light for reptiles and is 75 watts, ..... will this be okay, or will the black light make them crazy...
Weeelll, you see, they talk to me first:
In the mornings they sound like a flock of geese honking cause they want to be let out into their run area and fed. During the day, they proudly announce that one of them has produced an egg. Also during the afternoons when they get to run in the yard...
I'm pretty sure that my smartest girl has gone broody according to the descriptions of that behavior I've read here. My question is how long does this go on for (we have only girls)? Should I try to break her of this broodiness, or let her work it out of her system??
Thanks!
Thanks Chicken Chick! I did staple up a folded sheet to give a little more privacy, and they seem to like it. I'm really enjoying all the drama as I'm really a city girl and have never been around chickens before. It's funny though, one will finally lay a small egg, and another one will make...
My normally sweet and quiet girls are starting to lay. We have 12 black sex link pullets that are 17 weeks old. Only two of them are laying small eggs right now....but what I was curious about was all of the new strange behavior going on. The one we call the 'golden girl' was in the nesting box...
Dear FarmGirl,
I was able to get rid of all of my extra chicks by posting them on freecycle for Garland Co.....I'll bet there's one for Texarkana. They all went to good homes and I'm down to the original 12 that I wanted to order in the first place....you know, minimum orders and all.....
Good...
Love your Cactus Rock Farms page, rbamterry! Do you attend the Farmer's market here in town? It seems like it's starting late this year......due to the construction??
Love your ideas for classroom modules, but didn't you get enough of that when you were teaching, or do you miss it???
Best...
Dear Covenant Creek, How long did/should our sex links lay eggs for? 3 years, etc. We're the kind who get attached to animals, so we'd like to keep them as long as they're laying anything at all. However, even our tender hearts will not go as far as to keep 12 'pets'. Thanks
Well, apparently you wash them with warm water, dry them and dip them in food grade mineral oil and let the extra oil drain off by setting the eggs on a baking rack, then you store them either in a cool location or refrigerator for up to 6 months.
The other method is to freeze them by...
There is just the two of us, but we would like to have a few extra eggs to store over the winter and to give away to friends.....We've brought our 27 pullets down to 12, by giving the extras away on freecycle......How many eggs will we be getting a day, a good guess will do?
They are Black Sex...
