Hi all! I've been trying to help one of my sister's hens, an Easter Egger who is about a year old with a prolapsed vent. She's currently molting, so I don't think she is trying to lay eggs or anything, but I can't seem to have any luck with treating her!
I've been giving her warm baths to...
I'm so glad I found this thread. I just lost my sweetest, favorite chicken, a 1 year old black bantam cochin, Tiny, and couldn't for the life of me figure out what happened to her. Went to give the girls some treats this morning, and she was dead in the run where she liked to take dust baths...
Please, if anyone can offer any help or advice...I'm so lost as to what to do for poor little Po. She is doing much worse today...she can hardly stand at all, and pretty much any motion makes her fall into a kind of seizure. Sometimes she starts beating her wings, but usually, her head just...
Update: Po seemed to be doing a little better tonight...she was managing to eat a bit and drink, though her head was still twisting a bit when she lowered it. If she moves her head too much she'll end up kind jerking it convulsively and then stumbling onto her side. But for the most part she...
This morning I went out to give my girls a warm mashy treat for this chilly, rainy day, and I noticed my 8 month old BO hen standing on the ramp that leads out of their coop. I wondered why she wasn't running down for the treat, so I held a little on my fingers through the mesh, but she didn't...
Hi all...when I went to let my ladies out for their daily excursion into the yard, I noticed my Buff Orpington hen seems to have a bit of a dirty vent. First, the necessary information:
1) What type of bird , age and weight. -- BO, 6 months, and...I have no idea, but she is one hefty lady...
I'm not an expert, but I think that yellow/runny stools can be a sign of coccidiosis or worms? If you have a vet you can take him to, that might be the best thing. It could be stress, too, from the cold... I think you did the right thing getting him separated and warm. Maybe see if he'll eat...
Summertree Animal & Bird Clinic in Dallas treats chickens! Don't know which vet specifically, but they're all fantastic. I've taken my parrots there for years.

Okay, today I took Tiny out to give her the saline wash and silver treatment. Her eye looks a little better, but she still has this weird lumpy mass on the outside corner of her eye. If you look at the first picture I posted, you can see a little red scab there above and behind her eyeball...
Okay, update! Her eye is no longer swollen like it was... however, the spot where she seemed to have gotten pecked had gotten kind of lumpy looking and scabby, and then I think her tear duct (?) might have gotten blocked, so I'm back to bathing it in warm saline and making sure there's no plug...
Thanks everyone! I'm definitely going to the feed store tomorrow to get the layer feed. They always have food available, but that makes a lot of sense about the calories and the extra protein. Kinda like being pregnant, I guess! I just gave her a cooked egg with boiled, crushed eggshell...
Maybe you could try separating her for a while? If you keep her somewhere where you can see her better, maybe you can snatch any eggs she lays before she gets them. And then the other eggs would be safe, too.
I wonder if it's a habit that you can break, if you can keep her from doing it for...
Well, one of my girls, the White Leghorn, just started laying eggs over the weekend! Yay!!! Anyway, today I noticed she seems to be acting really really hungry, like running around the run picking at anything resembling food, devouring grass from my hand, etc. She's the only one doing that...
My White Leghorn, Tilly, officially won the race to First Egg among my young flock! Here it is!
Here she is before she got her big old comb and wattles:
