We recently got 6 new chicks. I'm not sure how old they are, but we got them about a week ago and they're completely/mostly covered in feathers. We use a bright fluorescent heat lamp to keep them warm, and for the past week we've just had it on 24/7. Every night they'd be awake and active, only...
I'm just not sure how any animal could have gotten in and then taken 6 medium sized chicks and a full grown chick through a hole maybe the size of a ruler, if not smaller. Unless I'm missing a huge hole they can get through.
Most of the feathers were in a corner behind the coop. I also found some blood or flesh. I'm already at school, but I'll send some picture when I get home. I'm living in Michigan.
Update:
We left chicken #2 back in the coop and blocked up any holes and entrances an animal could get through. I woke up this morning to find her missing. The only way in and out of her coop is by opening the locked door from outside. I'm so devastated. I can only suspect someone is doing this...
Thank you so much for the support. While I was at school, I pestered my dad enough to leave work for a moment to come home and take care of her. I only hope he did it as fast and painless and he could have. If we ever have chicken questions and problems again, I'll be sure to come back here...
My parents came home last night at midnight, and were too tired to do anything for her. I woke up this morning to find her in so much pain. It looks like there are even more maggots than before, and she was running around flipping her head back and forth. I think the maggot might have gotten to...
Thank you so much! I was only able to get through this with all your help. I'll make sure my parents read the article ASAP so our chicken doesn't have to suffer any longer.
Chicken #2 is doing much better. She ate a little bread and peanut butter and is drinking on her own. I'm just worried about how much pain Chicken #1 is in. Euthanizing her is probably the right decision, but what's the best way to do it? I don't think my parents will want to take her to a vet...
I cleaned off the blood as best as possible yesterday, and don't see any new wounds where she could have bled from. She's eating the bread and peanut butter, so I'll try to take a closer look once she's done.
The 2nd chicken wouldn't eat it from my hand, so I just left a little piece for her, and the chicken with the head injury won't open her eyes but still responds to noises and touches.
Last night she had both open, I don't know if maybe something happened or she just wants it closed. I don't have any mealworms, but I'll try the bread and peanut butter
