Who Has ordered from McMurray Hatchery

Thanks so much for your detailed absolutely hysterical account, allsardane! I was really wanting even more of the personality quirks of your chicks - I'm so sorry for your experience with the post office - We have a small one out here in the country and they were more than cooperative knowing...

    Araucana, Ameraucana or EE?

Your eggs are exactly the same shade of blue that I get from the girls ordered from Murray McMurray Hatchery. One of the things I really enjoyed was all the different colors and patterns the chicks turned into. I guess mine are what are know as EE's but I don't care - I LOVE them!!

Who Has ordered from McMurray Hatchery

I just received my second order, having been extremely satisfied with the 84 chicks received from them last May. This year I ordered 99, received 104 including the free exotic and 4 free extra roos. They were at the post office at 5 am Monday morning last week and IMMEDIATELY drank and ate and...

    treats and egg laying

One of the hatchery catalogs that I received last year said not to feed fruit for the same reason that your farmer suggested. It is the only place I've ever seen that info and my chickens aren't old enough to lay yet. I'll probably do an experiment to find out if there is any validity to this.

Caught this on our rock wall...(pics)

This info might be completely out of date, but I grew up in Walnut Creek, California (Northern Calif.) and we had several ground squirrels in the pasture - they were colored like your squirrel but were built more like prairie dogs and had a short stubby non fluffy tail. This memory is more than...

Free ranging unprotected all day - do you do it?

I had the same problem as your's - I just couldn't stand the thought of losing any one of mine, even though I ordered 80 of different breeds, assuming that some would be lost. When they were 8 weeks old I had such a run of grasshoppers in the pasture and everywhere that I figured it would be...

    Fortworth Texas

I live in Springtown on 7 acres - have 80 darlings - a VERY mixed flock, from Silver Seabright Bantams to Jersey Giants, 7 of them are roosters - Did Fort Worth make a ruling on having roos in the city? I don't read the paper everyday.

Well, i butchered my first chicken...

This info is from memory over 50 years ago growing up on our family farm, but my Mom always employed the "cone" method - We would process 150 or so at a time so had a series of 3 cones. She would hold the feet in one hand the help the head down the cone with the other where she would hold on...

Late night snakes trying for the quail!

My two cents worth about copperheads - (and my goodness the ones in your photos were HUGE!!!) One of my husband's outdoor magazines this last year had an article about someone who was bitten - the anti-venom shots cost $41,000 - apparently it's scarce stuff. A friend that breeds Corgis had...

The pictures might not be the best quality, but those chicks sure are! I would be very proud to be the mama to those cuties. I hope you post more pics as they mature.

    securing a coop against predators

Hello - Sounds like a wonderful idea to me. My husband made a 12 x 12 coop with a 12 x 20 run - buried metal roof flashing around the entire perimiter, put all our bent t-posts and lumber in the bottom of that "ditch" and then attached a cattle hot wire around the perimiter at 4" and 8" off the...

    best bedding?

Hi ya'll - I'm using pine shavings and the deep bed system - have been VERY satisfied with it and so have the chickens. Be sure to ask for the large fluffy shavings and not the ones that look like sawdust - most feed stores (at least in Texas) stock both kinds.

    Treats for chicks?

Oooh.....I'm going to have to try the cheddar cheese. Mine are 5 weeks old and since they were 3 weeks old their very favorite treat is scrambled eggs - they simply go crazy over it. They also love finely shredded cabbage - I do it in a cuisinart with the cole slaw type disc.

    bullying and introducing¬

Would you please tell us how young the chicks were that are introduced successfully into the established flock? The hatcheries were out of about 5 varieties that I really wanted this year and I'm dying to figure out how to pull off some new ones next year. The ones I have (80 of them ) are a...
