Thanks for the reply, appreciate it. I got into it after watching a youtube video
I supplement my layers with it a couple times per week. They also get grass and pasture but it seemed like a great way to get them some good affordable protein.
Thank you for that reply! Ya I got into it with my hens who get it as a couple times per week treat. They also get regular greens from the yard and tractor as well. Since I was already doing it with the hens I wondered about the meaties.
Hello has anyone tried using the TS catfish feed for their broilers? If so what did you think of it? I'm also thinking of fermenting it. Ya I'm out there but I like it out here.
SO here's what we have done. Last year we began a compost pile in the fall and added chicken manure from coop clean outs to that pile along with grass clippings, weeds, twigs etc etc from yard clean up. I tried hard to layer things but sometimes I gotta keep it moving to get everything done so...
Sorry for your loss there. Sad news at the end of this thread. Some days I don't feel like getting them out to the chicken tractor but then I usually do because I realize it's really fun/good for them and none of us knows what tomorrow may bring.
2nd Round of meaties arrived this morning. Now I need to know how much heat they need. The birds at the store weren't even under a lamp. Our highs are in the 70's, temp where birds are is about 70ish. I guess I need to still run the lamp, maybe I'll put on a timer. Seems like overkill to...
Ya I gotta say the broth is lookin lovely this morning. Can't wait to have some. Already gave some to our terrier who is 13 w some arthritis. He loved it.
Cool story about other cultures and chickens. Thanks for sharing it.
Well gang, harvest morning has come and gone now. That was a busy morning.
Here are the take aways:
8 birds yielded 47.5 lbs of dressed chicken
Largest bird (birdzilla) was 7.25 dressed
Smallest (squirt) was 4.25 dressed
Fire heated scalding pot worked great
Kill cone worked good but need a...
We will be doing our first round of meat birds this coming week. I had the good fortune to have a friend ask for help in processing a bunch of his and that experience was invaluable. I have my stations ready to go and I'm excited to begin the harvest. Here's a picture of my just completed...
I feel your pain, added 40' of french this year to go from half the chicken run then behind the shed and out under and past the meat bird run. #rockyclaysoilsux
But it's totally worth it, we've been deluged since then, we got 8.5 in April 6 in may and almost 6 in june. Working on an ark for...
Glad I stumbled on this thread. My first run of meaties goes to Cone Camp next week and one of them we have named Birdzilla. Clocking in at 10lbs live weight just a day ago. it's crazy to think they were just chicks May 5. Thanks for the post. Wondering how the chicken sausage would go, I...
We are now dealing with this issue. It was caused I think by someone (who shall remain nameless and who's name is not Jim) giving the hens eggs to eat by occasionally tossing one on the run floor. This is a practice that is CERTAIN to cause problems and guess what it did. So I've upped their...
