I have a girl who is broody and has been for almost a week. Today I got the call from a friend who wants chicks so I put 6 eggs that were laid yesterday and have been stored on my counter under her marked with the date in marker. She is in a nest box that the other girls frequent. I tried...
I am newer to chickens and I have 2 BA's that have gone broody. They went sometime while I was on vacation. They have stopped laying and sit on the nest all day long and at night too so I am pretty sure they are indeed broody. I have a few questions.....
1. how long will this behavior last...
Last year I filled our run with sand. The sand has since washed away or mixed with the dirt making the run like concrete. It holds water really bad and stinks. I was thinking about filling the run with pea gravel this year hoping it would make it drain easier. What are the pro and cons of...
I am glad you pointed this out. I have 2 girls who went through a lite moult and I thought their eggs had gotten bigger. DH said I was crazy but seems I was right afterall!
I had a rooster that would free range with the other chickens in the yard and in the evening he would put himself in the 10x10 dog kennel where I kept him seperate from the flock. When it comes to bed time it seems they know where to go!
Everyone Thanks for the advise. I ordered the pinless peepers today. I put all but one hen back with the flock. The hen I am keeping isolated started pulling feather out of the others as soon as I put her back in the run. The other 2 seem to have stopped for now. I will keep a close eye on...
Yes roosters are fun but I hope you paln on getting more hens for your roos. The best hen to roo ration is 1 roo to 10 hens otherwise the boys will wear the feathers off of your girls backs. Also my roos fought over the hens constantly resulting in me having to rehome one of them.
Today I sat and observed my flock of 7 hens and 1 roo. Everyone except one chicken has bald spots. No it is not from mites I have looked them over really good and dust them regularly with 7 dust and DE. I have witnessed the BA's pulling out feathers. I had all 8 of them in a 4x8 coop with an...
Thank you for the suggestions. I tried to catch her to seperate her today without success. The problem is I have 3 BA's and they all look alike so if I lose sight of her when she takes off and back into the flock I have a problem figuring out which one she is. I might have to band their legs...
