Help ! My Emu is laying eggs now in Montana

Good morning this is the first time our girl, Dublin, has laid, so we're very new at this. She is not staying on the nest. It has been bitterly cold this week (negative double-digits), so we have a heat lamp for them, and hung carpet in the stall opening so they can still get outside if they...

Help ! My Emu is laying eggs now in Montana

I hope I'm not hijacking this post, but our emu laid her first egg last night in Michigan. Our current outside temp is 3.7 degrees (-30 with wind chill, but she laid it in her stall in the barn)! We brought the egg in the house as instructed in a previous post, and will continue to gather them...

    Peafowl bleeding

Good morning, their lowest roost is 10'off the ground, the nighttime roost is 12'. I'm going to dewormer them again today (last time was in the early fall); hopefully that helps. I can't get a very detailed pic, they're not tame.

    Rectal bleeding in peafowl

Last dewormer was given in the fall. They are not tame so getting a detailed pic has been very difficult. There is a spot on the wing with blood as well. They are very protected and no predators can get to them. All 3 have been raised together since 10 weeks old. I'll try and get better pics...

    Peafowl bleeding

Good morning, I have this posted in the peafowl forum but haven't heard anything yet. I'm hoping someone can help us. Last summer we noticed our white peacock (we believe it is a male) bleeding from its rectum. We thought it was being pestered by our other peacock (positive this one is male); it...

Good morning, I'm hoping someone can help us. Last summer we noticed our white peacock (we believe it is a male) bleeding from its rectum. We thought it was being pestered by our other peacock (positive this one is male); it got better on its own and all has been well until this morning when we...

    Our emu chick started limping

Good morning Karina, absolutely get him checked out by a vet. I was nervous having to wait so long to get our chick in to an avian vet, and we were incredibly lucky that it wasn't a serious injury. If he's having trouble getting around at 4-5 lbs., imagine how difficult it will be when he's 100+...

    Our emu chick started limping

UPDATE: On Sunday morning Bilbo Baggins was limping a little bit again. We took him to the avian vet yesterday; she said the tendon is exactly where it should be, and that he has a mild muscle strain. She gave us suspension Metacam for pain and said that he'll be fine (and she was so very kind...

    Our emu chick started limping

Thank you for the advice. The problem on the day that we had to keep them confined is that, when I said it was "chilly and rainy", I meant it was stormy, windy, and hovering just a little over 50 degrees. Even in June, where we're at in Michigan the overnight temps can still dip into the 40s; we...

Us too :( And sometimes the internet is a very contradictory venue for getting accurate information. This forum has been invaluable though!

    Our emu chick started limping

That's a very good point about staph. Unfortunately we have to learn as we go with these birds so I greatly appreciate the input :) Callouses on some animals are normal, and I guess I just figured it was normal for these chicks as well. We are anxiously waiting for Monday morning so we can get...

    Our emu chick started limping

We do have a thick flannel sheet, folded several times, on the bottom of their crate for traction. I'd say it's about 1/2" thick. They will be able to be moved out to their permanent pen hopefully tomorrow. We did wonder about the marks on his hocks, if they were normal or not. The other chick...

    Our emu chick started limping

Update: I have had a very difficult time finding a vet that will look at Bilbo Baggins. There are only two avian/large animal vet offices that I could find that would look at his leg. Both are within 15 miles of us and are the vets for a small zoo nearby. However the two are married to each...

    Our emu chick started limping

Thank you for the response. He doesn't have any obvious wounds on his legs. We can pick him up, hold him, and manipulate the leg without him crying out. I read on another thread about a slipped tendon in emus, but that doesn't seem to be the case here either. The crate that we keep them in at...

    Hello from Mid-Michigan!

Thank you both so much for the friendly welcome :) I did post a question in the forums under Ostriches, Emus and Rheas about a problem with one of our emu chicks, if anyone happens to have any experience with them. We noticed him limping this morning and are hoping that someone can give us...
