I had browsed these forums for quite some time now, and realized I needed to become a member :)

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

When our daughter was four days old, my husband showed up after work with 4 day-old chicks. Needless to say, with a newborn, I was less than thrilled to have baby birds living on my kitchen counter (yes, that's where he put them!). However, after 15 years of raising chickens, I can't say enough good things about them - fresh eggs and less bugs around the house!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We currently have about a 10 hens, and one rooster

(3) What breeds do you have?

Quite honestly I'm not sure on the breeds of all of our chickens, but I do know that our rooster is a polish (mop-top), and we also have a silkie hen. We love the unique-looking breeds

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

I discovered BYC from browsing the internet; this website has a wealth of information that has proven invaluable to us.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

We live on 40 acres, and my husband built a campground at the back of our property. We love to camp, enjoy the company of our friends and family, and attending our kids' sporting events.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

We have a daughter that is off and married with kids of her own; we also have 3 teenagers. We own two Great Danes, a St. Bernard/Shepherd mix, 2 cats, 2 hamsters, and 1 millipede (that my daughter has been forbidden to scare me with, lol). Outdoors we have our chickens as well as 3 peafowl, 1 chinese pheasant, 2 emu chicks, and an extremely large snapping turtle lurking in our pond. Obviously, my husband is looking forward to retirement so that we can keep up with everything :)

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I have loved reading your intro and how you got started with your chicken adventures. I can just imagine that was quite a shock when your husband brought home chicks when you had a new born too. It's so nice to read though that you kept them and have enjoyed many wonderful years of chicken keeping.

If you would like help in identifying your birds you could post some pics in the what breed gender section, here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

I too love the different looking chickens and I have all polish barring one Amber link hen. I've also incubated some of the Amber link eggs, she is in with frizzle polish roo and they have produced some very interesting looking chicks.

Wishing you the very best of luck with all your birds and very interesting variety of other animals, including the millipede!!

Enjoy BYC :frow

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. You have a very good and thorough intro. A lot of us were lurkers before joining.) Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Thank you both so much for the friendly welcome :) I did post a question in the forums under Ostriches, Emus and Rheas about a problem with one of our emu chicks, if anyone happens to have any experience with them. We noticed him limping this morning and are hoping that someone can give us advice. Thank you!

You're welcome. I've never owned Emus nor know anyone who has, but I hope your Emu chick will be okay.
