Hello there! Welcome to my little corner on BYC!
Do you like my litte drawings of the coop in my head? Cross your chicken fingers with me, because here's hoping it will be a real, tangible thing by next month!
In my "Breeds to Seriously Consider" list there is:
BUFF BRAHMA STANDARD

LOL Yes this! Tell him if he adores them so, he should get a couple! Make sure you have him take care of them, and bond and stuff, learn their personalities.... fall in love in other words. Then they grow and he will be hooked, yes?
Coop here. Or at least that is the *plan*. I'm getting impatient for it to get finished, and I'm wondering if I can spur hubs along by getting some birds and putting 'em in the bedroom. On his side of the bed. On his pillow. HAHAHA

Not so. Food-grade DE, inhaled accidentally, is no worse than any other mineral dust e.g. road dust. I mean it is not GOOD for you but it is not that bad for you either. Non-food-grade DE is a known carcinogen in large or chronic doses, but not because of the reasons mentioned above...
Yep! Same here! Coop is planned to be 4x4, and either 2 ft off the ground or 18in. The entire thing is 4x12, the grass available underneath too.... I prefer 6 chickens but I'm aware of the way chicken math goes, so I'm doubling it to 12 and worried about the space when cooped up. I am now...
Its beautiful! Looks a bit like what I have planned mine to look like. But now I'm wondering if my actually coop is too small! How many birds do you have and what are your coop (just the house part) dimensions?
Oh ... ya know, I'm not sure DE works as a disinfectant either! LOL I told you I might not be of any help!
Yay for new babies, too! What are you going to do with all your free time and no chickens till JUNE!? LOL I'm asking because its very likely I won't get any chickens till around then too...
From what I've read, it is likely that they will roost on the edges and then probably end up pooping in the nest boxes. Do you have a whole lot of birds? I've read that you will need one nest box for every four birds. So unless you've got about 40 or more birds, I don't think you'd need that...
What about using some DE? *I'm new, so this might not be helpful*
I'm sorry about you losing the flock. You did the right thing though. Good luck with sterilizing the coop and run! I hope all turns out well with the new flock. Are you getting chicks you think or... ? Just curious.

5 + 2 + 6 =13 potential chickens
22 acutal chickens
24 eggs, which always offset acutal and potential chickens therefore:
13+22 = 35 -24=11 total must always be divided by 2 leaving 5.5
fractions only count when adding small breeds when they can be added together to make one...
