As someone originally from Oregon I've never understood why Bakersfield is Central CA, and Sacramento area is Northern CA. I don't know, when I drive back home to Oregon for a visit, there is still a whole lot of CA once I get past Sacramento LOL
Setting up a breeding pen for my project birds. I did get some solid white birds last year but most were culled for size and other reasons. These are the "almost there" 2016 birds I held back to continue working with. Should get a bunch of solid whites from them this year, then it's time to...
A few new photos of my Orloffs. The white are a project, I sent the solids to Oregon and if they pass muster they will go back to spangles to improve type. Otherwise they'll go to "freezer camp". The semi-whites I kept at home to play with some more.
Approximately 3 month old pullets...
I think it's pretty accurate, but you have to put in the right genetics first, and that's the tricky part. Genetics are pretty basic, as in BB x BB will only produce BB, BB x Bb will produce BB and Bb, etc. But when it comes to chickens, you might have 10 birds that are all visually sliver...
I've done quite a bit of research into this (the genetics interest me) and based on what I've learned the heavy white pattern we see on occasion in the Orloff is called hysterical mottling. While it's possible people will get some solid white birds breeding the hysterical mottles, they will...
Try storing the fresh mushrooms in a paper bag in the fridge. I did this once years ago, just because that was how I brought them home from the store. Turned out the ones I didn't use right away dehydrated nicely. Ended up making a rough powder out of them and adding them to various recipes...
In addition to pre-planning, when possible have flexible recipes or meal plans. For example a meal plan might be pasta with a meat based red sauce, side vegetables and fruit. When I go to the grocery store I will buy whatever meat, vegetables and fruit are on sale.
My shopping list usually...
Looking at the photos I posted, I actually think they are two different birds. I had a couple of these "sports", with various levels of white. And those last two photos I don't think are far enough apart in age for that big of a color variation. So probably 2 birds (I should have kept banding...
Question for those with white projects. I know a number of people on here are playing with developing a white Orloff, using spangled birds with excessive white, to try to eventually get birds that are solid white. Looking at the genetics behind that, wouldn't a better route to go be to introduce...
New pictures of some of the girls. One of them went broody and is currently sitting on some eggs, the rest have all been turned out with the layer flock. To many broodies sitting on eggs already, I don't need to set anymore LOL If even half of them hatch that's 20+ new chicks and I'm mainly...
If she can cover 14 eggs that would be fine, but unless she's a big girl, or fluffy, I'd be surprised if she can consistently keep that many under her and warm. My girls can usually handle around 10 before I start finding eggs sitting next to, but not under, the hen. I have a variety of...
If the crate is big enough for her to be able to get off the nest to poop, I would lock the door and put food/water in there with her. I just had to do this with one of my broody hens. Every time I checked her some of the other girls had added new eggs to the nest, some of the eggs she'd been...
Some more pictures of my birds. They range from about 10 months to 3 years old. Still adjusting to some sudden heat, hence the droopy wings on some of them.
Double spurs on this guy, it's bonus points in the bantam standard, I'll be curious how they view it in the new LF SOP.
How hard is it to breed for smaller wattles, and maintain them once you have them? I would say overall my hens have smaller ones, at least they are smaller than almost all of my other breeds. On the flipside I would like to see a little more size in the girls so… Hopefully they can produce...
