Thank you for the advice. I will probably attempt a trial run soon. Most likely I'll sit outside the coop for awhile to listen for anything that sounds overly concerning. I guess there's no way to really know until I do it. Actually that's how this whole chicken thing has been...trust that...
So...I'm moving along on this chicken adventure, after starting with 6 chicks in March. Those lovely ladies (golden sex links) are laying lovely brown eggs daily and have adjusted to their schedule of coop overnight, run during most of the day, and free-ranging for a couple of hours before...
Last night I was brave and let the chickens roam around the barn while my dog was unleashed. I kept a close eye on all of them, and it went just fine. When a chicken started to peck at her she sort of did a little jerk of her head and the chicken quickly backed off. After a few minutes they all...
And just like that we have doubled our flock! Yesterday we got our 6 new chicks in the mail from Meyer Hatchery. I was so excited when the call came from the post office... Then I was nervous to open the box, having read some rather creepy accounts of dead chicks. It was amazing to open the...
I have been reading about suggestions to help my schnoodle control her hunting instincts around my 8-week-old chicks. She is much calmer now, and I was really hopeful. Then yesterday, I had her on a leash while the chicks wandered around the barn. The chicks are not at all afraid of her, so they...
We built a PVC chicken tractor over the weekend and got to let our little flock enjoy the outdoors finally! My husband did all of the planning, and I helped out with the construction. We are probably going to add a couple of wheels so that it is easier to move around the yard and pasture when...
I already have 6 6-week-old chicks (golden sex-link) and have ordered 6 more (Rhode Island reds, Easter Eggers, and surprise) from Meyer Hatchery; the new chicks are due later this month. We are finishing up our coop...if this crazy Ohio weather would just settle down a bit.
My lovely chickens are: Beatrix (Trixie), Ophelia, Hortense, Maybelle, Donna-Dell, and Thelma Lou. I have ordered 6 new pullets for later this month, and their names are awaiting them. They wil be: Zelda, Hermione, Minerva, Hester, Jemima, and Tallulah.
Hello! We are new to this, just getting our first 6 chicks last month. I'm already hooked, and last week I ordered 6 more that should arrive in late April. My husband and I are busily working on our coop, and I am trying to learn all of the things I should have learned before I bought those...
Thanks for the suggestion. As I have been reading things on this site for the last few weeks, I am sure you are right. My husband and I are starting the building this weekend, and we are going with a bit more than double our original idea. Since we both still have full-time jobs, we are...
I am in Geauga County in northeast Ohio. Just starting out on this adventure with 6 Golden Comet chicks. Hope to build our coop over the next week or so during our spring break. Any other northeast Ohio folks out there??
Your chicks sure look a lot like my Golden Comets that I got from TSC three weeks ago. A couple of them do have more whitish, cream-colored wings and tail feathers. The other four are more mottled tan/brown/cream. I'm in Geauga County, northeast Ohio.
My husband and I have been looking at the larger coops since we ultimately want to have a dozen chickens or so. We found one we really like today and hope to modify a bit and begin working on in a week or so. I will check out the Ohio thread, as well. Thanks for the advice!
We just love maple syrup and get a real kick out of all the fun times we have each year...kids and grandkids come home for it, and many friends join in. Good times!
