I have 4 hens and 4 boxes, they use to all lay in the same box now they have all made separate nests and don't even use their box's. Oh well, I'm still getting an egg a day from them all and they all seem very happy. Guess they can lay wherever they want.
Thanks. That's what I needed to know. I'll just keep a small bowl out for them, even though they wont eat it LOL, I end up throwing most of it away, or the dogs get into it, at least they love the chicken feed.
I'm not worried about them starving by any means! I know they will eat it if they need to. I need to know if the other food I give them along with the bugs in the yard is good enough for them as far as protein and calcium goes can I forget the pellets all together? Should I be adding anything...

I learn new things every day with my birds. They are so much fun, I'm loving every second with them! I also have 2 EE's that I'm super excited to see what color eggs I get!!!
Please help me determine if my Barred rock hen is really a roo or not. I have 2 and both are about 15 weeks old, they are not laying yet, neither have long tail fethers and the one I'm most concerned about with the larger comb has the shortest tail of all my hens. Here are a few shots of both...
