I have 6 more RIR-all the same age and I got them all from the same breeder. The other 6 seem fine, but I'm keeping a close eye on them.
When I was growing up, we had RIR and game chickens and most of the time, once they came through "chickhood", it was rare to lose one, except to predators...
I changed the feed and added ACV to the water. I hadn't been before, but like I said, everything seemed fine.
If I ever figure out what happened, I'll let everyone know.
I lost 2 RIR pullets Wednesday. They seemed fine when I checked them is the morning, but I found them dead when I checked them in the afternoon. They were 12 1/2 weeks old. I still don't know what happened.
Where are you located?
Not that I could tell. I looked all over and didn't see any tooth/fang marks. We don't have any snakes around-in the 2 years we've lived in this house, I've only seen 1 small snake and it was dead.
One of them looked like she was just roosting on the ground, with her legs tucked up under her...
No thunderstorms, just a light rain.
I know they didn't get wet because the run is covered and the rain was so light and the wind wasn't strong enough to blow it in from the sides.
Thanks for all the replies.
They did have water, I only had one waterer in with them. I change the water every day and wash out the container, so no algae issues. The run is really well shaded, so I don't think it was a heat issue, but not sure.
The food didn't get wet and I clean the trough...
Yes, they were all the same age. I've been feeding them Dumor Grower/Finisher 15%. They have been in the run since I got them on May 15th. I still have to build the coop and the permanent run, they have been in a temporary run.
When I checked them this a.m., they seemed fine, but it was...
This morning, I left for work about 5:30 a.m.. I fed and watered the "girls" and as far as I could tell, everything was okay.
I got home about 7:20 p.m and when I checked, 2 of them were dead. As far as I know, nothing was wrong. I'm sure there wasn't a predator, they were both intact...
I'd love to make it, but unfortunately, I can't.
I just joined Friday and didn't have the faintest idea something like this happened!
Maybe next year (is it always about the same time?)

I would have to mirror what's already been said.
I wouldn't mess with a 'coon. Those things are mean and tough. I would say get a .22 bolt action rifle with some subsonic cartridges. I'd try and shoot 'em just about where the shoulders meet the neck. You should hit the spine and kill them...
Well, after reading this thread, I can see I'm in the minority here-as near as I can tell, almost every other post was by a woman, and I haven't seen a single reply that refers to "my wife", so I'll start.
My wife is my best friend and I can't imagine my life without her. She puts up with me...
I just joined Friday night and see a lot of posts about predators chewing through chicken wire and welded wire.
Has anybody tried using expanded metal for the enclosure? I'm thinking of using 3/4" diamond 13 gauge expanded metal for my coop, with 12" "wings" that fold out onto the ground on...
