Oh goodness. Animals are hardwired to be the way they are, with consideration to evolution. There’s a reason why some aren’t domesticated and shouldn’t be. Your example is a great one! No matter how much you nurture and baby them, they will always be raccoons.
Hi love. I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s so hard losing a family member. Not sure if you are interested or ready for a new conure. I have two, one is a lovely sun conure that I would love to see go to a loving home. I did not expect to get diagnosed with addisons and my birds aren’t getting all...
Once my hens were old enough (started laying), I felt comfortable enough to let them out of their pen in the morning. They expressed a great desire to roam freely and explore their surroundings.
I would consider the following:
1) do the chickens have enough shelter if they need to hide; trees...
Could be a possum. I watched one latch onto my 12lb duck by the cheek and dragged her outside her pen at dusk. I was able to scare it off my duck and rehab her for the next year. I’ve never seen a possum so big in my life! They can drag the body far away from the attack site.
Hi. I’m so sorry about your hen. In my years of experience, coyotes and possums kill and drag the body far away. Sometimes you’ll find a small bit of bloody feathers from the scuffle. Sadly, when the body is nowhere in sight, a coyote is the likely culprit. Make sure your pens are completely...
Lol! I see that. Might as well keep it going for continued knowledge on the subject. I bet a researcher could write books with all the info found in these forums 😂
I was told if the raccoon is fed, he will likely not search for live chickens to eat. It’s when they are starving and can’t find food that they must work hard to get into a pen and prey on live food.
Thank you for sharing this! It’s so tough when you have such a big heart for animals sometimes. I’m in the same situation and wonder if I could possibly raise this pup alongside my grown hens.
Update: I contacted Purina and they said I should not be feeding ducks layer pellets when it's not laying season. This is especially vital to drakes. They suggested maintenance feed.
I feel terrible for being the cause of all of this! I'm switching their feed today. I pray this resolves the...
Thank you all so much for responding!
I will contact Purina to see if they have any reported cases of food contamination. I have read that layer pellets (for ducks and chickens) does not contain a lot of nutrients and it's good practice to mix in chick feed. Chick feed contains more vitamins...
MissLydia,
Could you please help me with my ducks?
Duck background: 1 - 2 year old ducks, both drakes and hens are suffering/ Free range and Purina Leyena Layer feed mixed with chick starter feed (3:1 ratio)/ live freely on lake and come home for breakfast and dinner.
I have noticed a few...
