Right now dirt seems to work fine for the run. We'll see how it goes this Spring when it rains. Right now we have some plastic sheeting stuff on top to stop the snow.
Our coop is only 3x6 and I think I used 3 bags of "coarse/multi-purpose" sand. I found it in the construction/concrete section at Lowe's/Home Depot. It came in decent size bags. I don't plan on "replacing" at all really, more-so just adding as needed kind of like the kitty litter box (although...
Update:
So we added a few bags of multi-purpose sand from both Lowe's and Home Depot along with a little bit of "Sweet PDZ". It's been great! The poop just sits right on top and is super easy to scoop up with the cat litter style scooper. The chickens seem like they could not care less which...
Thanks for the advice! The chickens are down in the run all day like you said but might want to hang out in the coop with the sand for dust bathing. I think we can convince them to use the two baths they already have though. I was thinking of putting up a piece of wood like you said as well if...

I purchased this from Amazon and works great. It's currently at least 40ft away and has great signal. I tested the remote sensor in the fridge along side a couple "instant read" thermometers I have and it was dang close (1-3degrees off)

Anyone know what the brown speckles are? I think the white blotches on the other egg are calcium deposits?
The brown speckles were on shells from our Easter Egger and our Amuricana(sp?) same day which was weird. Is this maybe a stress thing or food related?
This is our first year with chickens and wow it's been fun. Below are some pictures and even a linked video of our coop. The run section start at 6x6 then expanded to 6x9 when we put the coop together. The coop is 6x3 and about 4 feet tall I believe. The entry is from below for the chickens. We...
