Other hens pecking my hen around the vent

Here's a video of the chickens before the peepers were taken off. You can see how lethargic they are. I assume it's because of lack of food/nourishment. Take notice of the barred rock on the left. The skin on her butt is bright red. Could that be from some kind of allergic reaction to something...

Other hens pecking my hen around the vent

Thanks for all your guidance. The lowest on the pecking order has been bloodied a few times and takes a wide berth from the other chickens. Three of the four have their whole bottoms bare, from the vent up past their legs. The blinders were the last effort to stop the pecking. That solution did...

Other hens pecking my hen around the vent

I took the peepers off today. There was an immediate improvement in their mood. They began eating (and pooping after a few hours.) There were no eggs today. That is a first in months. Even in the coldest weather there would be three or four. They ate everything that had been sitting on the floor...

Other hens pecking my hen around the vent

Update: The peepers seem to have an adverse effect on the chickens. They have stopped eating. I tried to put piles of food on the floor of the run but they don't seem interested. They have stopped eating from the feeder. I cut some of the dividers out of it thinking the peepers were hitting the...

Here's a couple of pics of unhappy chickens. They seem fine this morning. The oprhington gets frustrated she can't see right in front of herself and goes into this machine gun pecking at the dirt. The others are just fine. They are happy and calling for me to come out with their morning treat.

Three of my four birds are still bare of feathers in the butt area. The fourth, a Rhode Island Red, has lost some, but not as much. She's a spunky chicken, so she most likely doesn't put up with it as much as the others. I watched intently for about a half hour today and saw the pecking...

Anyone else's chickens afraid of snow.

Our last storm was my chickens first exposure to the snow. Like most, the did not want to walk in it at all. There was a little bare dirt island in the middle of the run they stood around in. The snow in the coop was gone in a day. They now enjoy a snow boulder from the snow plow at least once a...

Other hens pecking my hen around the vent

Thanks for the info! I have 3 nesting boxes for the 4 hens. They have one box that seems to be the favorite, where I usually find at least three eggs. But the laying location can vary some days. I have watched a certain bird go up into the nesting boxes, then have gone and retrieved the egg...

Well.....the chicken pecking issue has not gotten better. It's gotten worse. All four of the birds now have bare butts. The pine tar seemed like a good temporary fix. Long term is another issue. It gets everywhere and doesn't come off. It seems to run off the chicken because of their body heat...

I must say that my first impression of the pine tar is a positive one. I put it on her wound and was immediately struck by how strong smelling it was. Not a totally unpleasant scent to me but when I put her down, the other hens definitely did not like the smell. One got close and prepared to...

Back to square one. She’s been pecked again, worse than before. Blue Coat is not effective. Trying pine tar now.

Other hens pecking my hen around the vent

I put the Barred Rock back in the coop last night because she seemed so out of sorts isolated in the dog crate. I gave her a custom paint job with Blue Coat before putting her out. At the same time I took one of the other birds out that seems to be pretty hyperactive and somewhat of a bully. I...

Other hens pecking my hen around the vent

She pecked out more feathers last night. Pic below shows the damage. The new spot is about 10-11 o'clock in the photo. The light colored spot just off-center right is the scab from when she was being pecked by the other birds. There are still places where the bluecoat is discoloring the...

I was told that due to her not being in the dirt and suspicion of parasites, to dust her with DE under the wings and behind the neck on a daily basis until she is able to get into the dirt again. Edit: via use of a plastic ketchup dispenser filled with DE....one "puff" at each location.
