Noisy Chickens - Afraid Neighbors will complain

Also, they free range in our rather large backyard (around 2x bigger than the average, one-story, middle-class house). However, it's not like a giant field or anything. They will however have to get used to being in just a dirt and weeds area as opposed to where they forage around now (which...

Noisy Chickens - Afraid Neighbors will complain

The problem is when they do it on the weekends when people sleep in. Also, the one that is the most vocal is the most submissive/bullied chicken, meaning that I tend to spoil her and hold her the most. I don't suppose a run will make her feel more secure, would it? Thanks for the boredom busters!

Noisy Chickens - Afraid Neighbors will complain

Yes, they are legal and don't require a permit provided you have less than 6. We live in a cul-de-sac, so the neighbors are right next to us. We are on speaking terms with maybe 3 of them, the rest not so much.

Noisy Chickens - Afraid Neighbors will complain

For the most part, my girls were pretty quiet. Some clucking now and then and the occasional false predator alarm sqwuak, but otherwise what I expected. However, in the past few months (they're around 2 years old now) they've been going crazy in the mornings. From 7-12, they'll give short...

    Chicken Eczema?

I tried the olive oil and it helped a lot! Some of the dried skin flaked off and it keeps her moisturized really well. Thank you so much!

    Chicken Eczema?

One of my silkies, currently almost 2 years old, has recently developed white, dry patches on her face, almost like eczema. Is this dangerous? How do I fix it? If it helps, she has been rather broody for the past week.

    Is My Chicken Sick?

I see no sign of injury, crop feels okay, I'm waiting for droppings to examine, and I've separated her from the flock.

    Is My Chicken Sick?

Symptoms: Fatigue (particularly in the legs) Loss of appetite? (although she could just be full) Loss of feathers? (she's nowhere close to being bald, so I'm not sure whether this is a sign of her illness or she's molting normally) Tremors/shivering (recent development; I've covered her with a...

    Is My Chicken Sick?

I have five 3-month old chickens; 4 Silkies and a Polish. We just moved them from the cardboard box in our garage to the coop outside two days ago, and they seemed to be doing fine. Just a few hours ago though, I noticed that my Polish was acting a little off. When I tried to grab her to put her...

    Splash or White Silkie?

shouldn't she already be fully developed by 2 months? Or do they take longer to physically mature?

    Splash or White Silkie?

When I ordered my batch of silkies, two of them I ordered as white silkies. Now, at around 2 months, one of those chicks which I thought was white is looking an awful lot like a splash silkie, an off-white color with flecks of light gray. When she was a chick, both she and her white sister both...

Coop Bedding vs. Nesting Box Bedding?

For a chicken house, if both the coop and the nesting boxes have the same type of bedding, will the hens be able to tell the difference between the two different areas? Should I use wood shavings for the coop and straw for the boxes, or can I use wood shaving for both, provided that the hens are...

    Silkie Sizes

We recently got a polish and 4 silkies: 2 white, a black, and a buff. They're three weeks old. While they all seem to be healthy, it seems like the black and buff are a bit smaller than the rest. I'm not sure if this is a breed thing where white silkies are larger than the rest, and I have as of...

    Chick Sleeping on it's back?

Also, the way she walks is that while her tibia and metatarsus are bending normally, her metatarsus and feet cannot bend, so the feet and metatarsus basically form a straight line.

    Chick Sleeping on it's back?

I recently discovered that my silkie chick, just a couple days old, has an injured leg, and I've been helping it to eat again, keep it warm, holding it, etc. I wrapped the legs up to help them heal, and I'm finding my baby chick asleep on it's back, legs straight-ish and pointed away from it and...
