    sick, weak emu

Thanks for the response! Sadly, he passed, he was not a chick, but a 1 1/2 year old youth. We are not sure what he died of, and are watching the other birds closely for illness. Thanks, megan

    sick, weak emu

We have 4 emus, 2 we have hatched out and raised as babies. One of those 'youth' emus seems to be very weak, very thin and we have to help him/her up from time to time. The others are all fine, any ideas of what might be wrong? it is the smaller of the two youth birds, but only by a little bit...

emus and horses in same pasture

Hi all- This group has helped me raise my emus from babies, so I return with yet another question. Is there anything wrong with putting horses in the pasture with the emus? they have lived together prior, but my daughter was concerned that the emu poop was not good for the horses feet. Any...

    emus and goats?

We have been housing our two Nigerian dwarf goats in a run along side our 4 emus (2 adult, two youth we hatched out), is it possible to now put them together? we would like the goats to have more space, and the emus have a huge pasture. Any thoughts out there? Megs0330

Emus - can males and females from same family breed?

Thank you so much, so it sounds okay in the short run, but not in the long run! Good to know :-) since we don't even know if our adults are male or female (we are pretty sure one is a female) then we won't really know who is breeding with who unless we separate their pastures which we might do...

Emus - can males and females from same family breed?

This may be a stupid question, but I thought I read somewhere that a 'breeding' pair could be siblings or parent/child, is that true? seems odd, but I thought I would double check. We have 2 adult emus and 2 young ones that came from one of the adults. We are curious what our chances are for egg...

    young emu poop

Excellent info, thank you! They seem to be moving towards eating more of the starter right now too, and less of their veggies. Another question - we have two adults left (Papa was killed remember) and we were told that we had two females and only one male. Well, we KNOW the male was killed...

    young emu poop

This site has been very helpful with the care of our two young orphan emus - papa was killed by a coyote. They are growing, happy, eat a lot and poop a LOT. I think I may be overfeeding them, I give them about 1/2 cup chopped veggies 3 to 4 times a day, and they always have starter crumble...

    orphaned emu chicks

thanks everyone - even though the newest one (hatched 2 days after it's sibling) was real steady on his feet, we put them in one bin with screen mesh down the middle to get to know each other. They raised such a fuss trying to get to each other, we took the mesh out, and they instantly fell...

    orphaned emu chicks

thanks so much for the info, this has helped. He is doing really well, up on his feet, although a bit clumsy still! Is eating a bit, drinking water and pooping, so we are confident he will be okay!

    orphaned emu chicks

that answers my next question, about blending them with our two adults. Thank you for the advice! The second egg hatched this morning, chick looks healthy, and we have him separated from the first born because there are several days in between them in age. Do you think they can be housed...

    orphaned emu chicks

Hello- Our sad story is that our male was killed by a coyote while at the very tail end of his sitting time. The eggs were exposed for at least 8 hours, but remarkeably one has hatched and another will any time now. We just happened to have a neighbor with a warmed up and empty incubator! But...
