    Broody Hen Thread!

My buff Orpington has been persistantly broody for the last two weeks, so when our bator-eggs hatched I decided to give her a handful of chicks to care for. It's so moving to watch her interact with her babies! I really wasn't sure if she'd be a good mom, because I literally had to stuff them...

Sure you can hatch them in the same bator, although I think duck eggs prefer a somewhat higher temperature and they also take longer to incubate so you would be facing a staggered hatch. Read up on what the eggs need and I'm sure you can do it! Doesnt hurt to try anyways :-) Good luck!

The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Just had my first two hatched chicks! They came out of the maran eggs, so maran/araucana cross. Should be some nice olive eggers hopefully. The rest of my 25 eggs are peeping nicely by the sound of it. I will be hovering over the bator all day

That's good to know - we have two horses, living in the same building as our coop. I guess that puts us at somewhat higher risk... I think I'll talk to our family dr about vaccinating the kids early too. They'll get the vaccines in their schools vaccine program, but the tetanus shot is given at...

Ouch, that sounds bad! Thanks for the tip, I disinfected it and hope that does the trick. I have so many other health issues that I don't want to take any chances, but I don't feel like going to the dr right now as it's 10:00 PM in Norway. The neosporin will have to do :P Good night to you all...

    A vaccine against tetanus ;)

For the first time since getting chickens two years ago, one of my BO's bit my hand! She's not aggressive, she only wanted to see if it was edible I think. Question is: Do I need to get a cramp shot now since I'm not previously vaccinated against that?

As much as possible! I've struggled with malnutrition for the past six months (heart failure = no appetite). And we all know eggs are nutrient bombs! So I put them on or in everything I eat. Started making "drinks" of simply whipped eggs with some berries and sugar twice a day - my vitamin stats...

Pozees and Noncentzter: Thankyou both! I've had arthritis since I was a teenager, and look forward to get a new life! I have to wait a while though, because my heart isn't in shape for surgery yet. Someone please send over some patience - I sure don't have too much of it right now! Haha :) Best...

The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Reminds me of last summer, when so many of the Orpington chickens I hatched out from my own flock turned out to have a stripe of leg feathers! None of the parents has that!

I am completely paranoid when it comes to diseases. I have never brought a live bird into my flock, I don't ever feed wild birds on our property, and no other chicken owner sets foot in my coop without disinfecting hands and put blue bags on their shoes :rolleyes

Hospital waiting room selfie (just doing preops for total hip replacement)! They're so delayed, and I really don't have time for this - I have eggs to turn! Lol.

That sounds pretty awesome!! But I can't stop thinking disease when eggs are moved from one flock to another, and the vehicle should probably be disinfected between every stop...

Thankyou! There are some photos in the album, I think the link is in my signature :-) I second this - would love to see how others organize it all! My incubator is placed safely in the cellar, in my clotheswashing-room. Stable temperature and out of react for the kids! Also out of hubbys...
