I have a small backyard flock. In the past year 2 birds died and we were left with only 2 barred rocks. We recently bought 2 new hens and when brought them home put them near the run/coop of our original birds but they were separated by fencing. Everything was OK. It has been one week and...
I cannot say how relieved we all are and are now giggling about the fact that we thought she was sick when all she is doing is trying to be a good mama.
Do I just let her be broody or should I prevent her from going into the coop?

My 8 month old Silkie won't come out of the coop. I don't have a big coop, there is no food or water in there, just sleeping space. She has been huddled in her nesting box all day yesterday and this morning when I let the girls out she did not come but remained in her box.
To eat or drink she...
I have 2 BR, 1 Orp, and 1 silkie. They are mostly in a coop/run, but I let them out about a half hour before sun down to run around the yard.
This had been working fine until recently when it gets very dark early. Now we keep finding 3 chickens in the coop and the silkie (always her) wandering...
I very much want to post a photo of my coop because I cannot get my chickens to lay in their nesting boxes and I thought showing the design and layout might be more helpful to getting advice.
Neither my husband or I can figure out how to get the photo into the message. Help appreciated...
My chickens are now 9 weeks old. I only have 4 and they spend most of their time in their run/coop.
We noticed a couple of weeks ago that at dark they would automatically put themselves into the coop for the night and all we had to do was shut the door.
Recently I had let them out into the...
I have four 9 week old chickens, only one is a bantam. They are usually in their run but occasionally when I am able to stay in the yard (small and suburban) with them I will let them out for a bit before they go to bed.
Tonight when I did that I heard 4 very noisy crows land in a nearby tree...
Hi, this is my first time raising chickens. I only know of one place in my area to buy chicken feed but they don't have much selection. I have been going to Dodge Grain in Salem NH.
Does anyone know where I could buy some organic chicken feed in Massachusetts? I am in the Lowell area.

This is my first time with chickens, I have 4 girls who are 6 weeks old.
I am following the threads regarding the usefullness of DE in the coop and run.
I plan to rake out the pine shavings every now and then and toss it into my compost bin which eventually goes into my veggie garden.
So...
These are my first chicks ever. 2 BR, 1 BO and 1 silkie.
They are 4 weeks old, go out into their run during the day and back into my basement at night because their coop is not finished.
In the evening after dinner I like to let them out and peck about the yard a bit, it is a very relaxing...
Remember that composting is the best way to get rid of extra everything from your yard and kitchen and then all that good stuff gets to go back in your garden to help grow more plants!
These are my first ever chicks and they are only a week and a half old. They seem to like bugs, rice, bread...
My chicks are one week old and I'm in Massachusetts. We've been taking them out since they were 3 days old. Only at the peak of the afternoon so that it would be quite warm.
I judged by their behavior if they were happy. There was no loud peeping only gentle soft chirping and lots of scampering...
