Chocolate Orpington roo and pullet? 6 weeks old

I have 11 6-week old chicks, two are Chocolate Orpington. The rest are two are other color Orpingtons (Buff and Choc/Gold laced), a Wyandotte, a Barred Rock, two Olive Eggers (Cuckoo Marans x Legbar?), two Splash Marans, and a Sussex. The first four pics show the bird that looks like a roo to...

Old hen has right eye swollen shut

I finally got a chance to work with her. I wrapped her in a towel and her nostril was clogged. I applied a warm wash cloth and worked a small amount of smelly gunk out of her nostril. I pulled a blade of grass from her nostril using tweezers. With the grass out we're hoping the gunk will drain...

Old hen has right eye swollen shut

Thanks, this all sounds very helpful. I'll take a closer look at the rest of her tonight, last night I only looked at her eye. I'll post an update. Our newest chickens were bought at 6 weeks old in early March. We did cull a Marans from this group on 6/16 (~20 weeks old) who suddenly became...

Old hen has right eye swollen shut

This barred rock is 5.5 years old and suddenly has one eye swollen shut. She has been broody and otherwise behaves normally. I don't see any discharge or evidence of eye worms. We get about 5 new hens every year and she is in the oldest age cohort. An Iowa blue of the same age is broody now too...

Feather footed cuckoo marans - hen?

Anyone have an opinion? I don't know if this one is a slower-developing roo or a hen.

Feather footed cuckoo marans - hen?

I have three FF Cuckoo Marans and am confident two are roosters. The third, I waiver on. This one is smaller and darker than the roos, but I'm still not sure. Anyone have an opinion on whether this one is a hen or roo? Pics: 1. Just the chicken in question. He/she is about 13 weeks old. 2...

    Egg with tail

Here is what the inside of the tail end looks like. It seems like the egg came out before the shell was fully formed, so I guess I'll keep an eye on the hen for more oddities. She seems normal otherwise.

    Egg with tail

The tail is soft, as well as the end of the egg where it attaches. You might be able to see a slight coloration difference in the region where the shell is softer around the tail, as well as a slight pinkish tint on the end of the tail. It looks like a sausage casing that didn't get cut off...

    Egg with tail

One of my EEs just laid this egg in the middle of my backyard (7pm, almost dusk). She was lurching, like a dog, and laid this egg in the grass. I read other posts where pullets laid eggs like this, but this hen is over 2 years old. She is also lowest in the pecking order. Her eggs are normally...

    Ok to worm pullets?

Thank you both for the advice. I gave my mature birds 1/2cc undiluted Safeguard and redosed them after 7 days (was aiming for 10, but it didn't work with my schedule), which was about 10 days ago. So if I have this straight, I am giving the pullets 1/2cc each for 3 consecutive days? I did read...

    Ok to worm pullets?

I have recently wormed my laying hens with Safeguard liquid (the one for goats) and am at the tail end of the second 10 day egg withdrawal period. After I realized worming was necessary, I had already moved 7 pullets into the enclosed coop/run, sequestered in a rabbit cage, but they are living...

    Hen seems to be dying

Well, the hen died, as we expected. I didn't find any signs of mites or lice on her, but her vent was covered by a few feathers and gooey. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture, but it was green and yellowish orange. Does this sound like any of the worms? Is another possibility flystrike? Is...

    Hen seems to be dying

Thanks, Suzie. I will check for mites/lice too. My flock got them last year and I successfully treated them by spraying them with coconut oil in late spring. I try to check their feathers occasionally, but need to check again.

    Hen seems to be dying

Thank you for your insight. Do you have a recommended wormer and egg disposal period? My hens lay brown and blue/green eggs. Do you think I could limit my own egg loss by worming by egg color (de-worm the brown layers first, then the EEs)? Or is it too risky to wait to give one half of the flock...
