I got some eggs from an area person for my broody to hatch. She hatched 9 and they're 12 weeks old now. 3 I've already had to get rid of because they were clearly roosters (and one was crowing already) and we can't have roosters. 2 are definitely pullets. There are two beautiful ones who are...
Update: the necropsy came back as cancer and egg yolk peritonitis as the main cause of death. There were worm eggs in her feces too so we're going ahead and deworming the flock because they take forever to finish molting (some started two months ago and some are just starting).
I had a hen die last night. She had no symptoms until yesterday, she was wheezing with mouth open and head shaking. Clear eyes, no discharge nothing. I kept an eye on her and she was out with the flock and I was looking stuff up. When my husband came home we decided to see if we could see...
Thanks, I initially closed the whole coop off but they were all freaking out because they didn't have their preferred places to lay available. So I opened it up and blocked off her nesting box so they'd have to use the other one, but one hen still got back there. Tonight I moved mom to the less...
I have a first time broody (raised by my other broody). She started with 14 eggs and then I reduced to 10 by candling. Over time less and less were viable and now she has 4. Between Monday and Wednesday will be 21 days (eggs were a couple days apart).
Anyway, she is in the favorite nesting...
Got some chicks for my broody, but I think they were already too old (they're like 3 days old). I'm in soCal (north OC) I want them all to go together. I'm hoping to get back what I paid for them ($8 a piece). They are: 2 dark brahmas, 2 light brahmas, 1 buff orpington and one barred rock.
Updated 6 week pics:
#1 has a small comb, but still no real tail and the tail looks like there might be a small curled green feather (pic included). Anyways, wanted to update for anyone else that might be interested in guessing and because it's fun to see the progression.
I got some fertilized eggs from a small chicken farm for my broody hen, so they're all mixed breeds. They're about a month old, so pretty early to sex, I know, but just for fun. I have seven chicks. One (#2) I'm certain is a male. Anyway, here are the pics. #1 and #2 don't have a feathered tail yet.
This is my second time with my broody and chicks, no rooster. Both times she initially started in her own space. First time with two chicks this time 7.
The chickens usually have half to yard to themselves, but when I let Mom out with chicks for the first few times, I open the gate so they...
My broody hen had 8 eggs. 7 have hatched (last two last night). She left the nest today and there was one egg on there no signs of a pip. I tried to put it back under her, but she moved. So I candled it and did a water test. Other than lack of movement, it looks viable. It felt a bit cool when I...
