Today is day 21 for some eggs I put under my broody. I checked on her and one egg looked this the pic. The chick isn't moving or making sounds. It's very hot here in SoCal so I want to remove any chicks that don't make it asap. This is my first time with hatching chicks. Does this look normal? I think on the second pic I can see some "zippering" on the side.

That's not a standard zip like I see in the incubator.. looks like maybe the hen is helping.. or the egg became weak and started cracking. I see cracks going around the bottom that should not be there.. it usually stays solid for the chick to push against and release itself after the yolk has finished absorbing.

I cannot say with any certainty what the chances of survival are.

I'd hesitate to remove too early.. the standard temperature under the hen is around 102. But I might also at least inspect and see if I could see the chicks' beak in the opening where it can be breathing.

Happy hatching! :fl :jumpy

I don't want to bother mama too much but here's a new pic. It almost looks like the egg is getting squished by mom? Last year I gave her two already hatched chicks to raise and she did great. She's never hatched eggs before.
