    Rasiing chickens in Michigan

I live in W. Mich. and my experience is I've had problems with #1 racoons, #2 dogs, #3 possums(usually looking for eggs). We have predatory birds but I think they're too occupied with catching rodents, so they haven't been a problem. Racoons and possums have only been a problem when I was using...

Who killed my chickens? Dog or Coyote?

Thanks for all your responses. Funny thing is I never see any dogs wandering the neighborhood. Right after it happened I started setting eggs aside to put in the incubator, which holds 20. Yesterday they stated hatching, out of 20 I have 10 chicks. I think that's pretty good considering the...

Who killed my chickens? Dog or Coyote?

A little over a month ago I had some of my bird free ranging in my yard. We went to get a Christmas tree in the afternoon and were gone awhile. I didn't check the chickens at night with an automatic door opener, they take care of themselves. The next morning I noticed that most of the birds that...

I don't think there would be any safety advantage either, jams really don't need much for a safe seal. I remember my mom wax sealing her jams when I was young, unexposed to air, the sugar is what preserves the jam and jellies.

We do a lot of pressure canning in our All American including chicken. Unless you are canning with an antique canner, there is almost zero chance of blowing up a pressure canner. New canners have at least two overpressure devices usually a special rubber plug and the pressure weight. We have...

I have a chicken door opener for sale, I build them in my spare time to sell. Pictures are on my profile page, they are made to be added to existing up/down sliding type door, not swing open. They come with timer and 12v power supply. These are designed to be accessed from the inside, but if you...

I have a separate Wheaton Ameraucana flock, gentle birds otherwise but I have trouble introducing young ones in. I always start by putting a cage in their coop with their own waterer and feeder, keep them in there for a couple weeks. Then I open the door on the cage just enough for the little...

    automatic coop door opener

I've designed and built a couple chicken door openers, one I sold last summer, they seem to be doing very well. Mine two year old opener is lifting a 7+ pound door and it doesn't seem to have a problem with it. The door is so heavy because I mounted my door on heavy duty drawer slides which...

    Budget Chicken coop/run underway

If I were you I wouldn't bother with the top row of nest boxes, just use what you built as a cover for the bottom row. In our large coop we have about 20 hens and they only use two nest boxes. Plus a box outside when they free range. You'll need a cover because you don't want them using their...

Comment by 'mi chickens' in album 'Chicken door opener'

The pictures of the wooden door show a self locking design. The door is made with two pieces of ply-wood, the 'door' piece runs up and down in the slots. The back inside piece is connected and hinges on one bolt, when the door cord is pulled up the back piece 'unlocks' from the notch in the...
