Thanks Traphill. Chickens are fun, even if this experience hasn't been! I have 6 adults and want to increase my flock. I thought raising chicks would be fun for the kids! Not a lot of fun was had those first few days.
But at least the surviving 3 are doing well, as are the 3 replacements I...
Thank you help4me.
Fancychooklady - the ones that died were barely 3 weeks old. Far too young to be outside at night with no heat like the breeder had them the night before as I said in post 5.
And yes, I know they are my responsibility. Which is why I asked my breeder questions and set up...
Thanks for the lecture. I DID do my research - I asked a heap of questions from the breeder, who as it turns out gave me dud advice as I have already said. My only fault was trusting someone who I thought was an expert. One would think any breeder would give you correct advice. Unfortunately...
Thought I'd report back - I lost 3 of the 3 weekers. The other and the 2 x 6 weekers are fine. The breeder finally told me after I lost 2 that she had had them outside with no heat AT ALL the night before I picked them up. And it was freezing that night. So no wonder the poor things died...
It looks fairly normal to me. I did google it the other day, but I'm not convinced it is that. But I couldn't find an incubation period. The first one got sick within 24 hours of first being outside. Does it hit that quickly?
I lost the second one tonight and am dreading checking the others...
I bought 6 chicks on Saturday. 2 x 6 weeks olds and 4 x 3 week olds.
1 of the 3 week olds dies yesterday and another has gone downhill fast. We have them inside next to the fire (house is 20-22 degrees) and took the heat lamp off them as they didn't want to sit under it (I assume too hot??)...
Thanks for the tips. I didn't know that about the roosting perches, but I now understand why they don't use the current one, it's the same height as the roosting box! Current coop is only hip high and not great at all. Will add a few higher perches in the new one.
We are in the SW of...
LOL, no, that's at the base of the steps and I had watered the lawn so they were just pecking away. I often do wonder what they think though. I often have a 6 chook escort to collect the mail!
I'm new here and to chickens really! I got my first chickens about 8 months ago. Started with 4 one year old Isa's from the local egg farm. Fox got one and injured another a couple of months later. Injured one survived though! Has a limp from her injury, but she's a good little chicken. I...
Trying again as my first attempt didn't seem to work!
Anyway, this is the new coop my husband built me while on holidays. It's a massive improvement from what was already here, so I hope the girls love it!
I'm guessing they will be curious, but hopefully not anxious about the change. Is...
Thanks everyone :). I'm a novice so will probably inundate you with questions soon!!
JDchicks, I'm looking at some speckled Sussex, or the Lace Barnvelders. Both are so pretty and have a reputation as being docile which is what I want. Nice friendly chickens!
