I have a 3 yo black austrolorp hen, she has a it seems unusually large breast/ crop. It swings when she walks, it been this way for months. She seems OK, no signs of distress, eats and drinks normally, alert, active. Can this be normal, are there any concerns?
I have 2 remaining Black Australorp roos living together. They are the remainder of my first 6 birds I purchased from tractor supply; they sold me 6 roos. So much for straight run, never took that chance again. Dali and Egg get along fine they are 2+ years old. When I first open the doors in...
Thnx for the response; I currently give them layer pellets which is 18%, and this past winter i have been mixing some 20% chick crumbles with it. I give my flock of 11 hens and 1 rooster about 2 cups of mixed scratch grains per day, so I'll hold on some of this and try the shelled corn.
I have about 70 lbs of shelled corn that I was going to burn in a pellet stove, but plans have changed. Can my chickens eat this ? It's hold kernels they aren't cracked.
Hello all,
I have 5 RIR (raised together since 3 days old) and 1 australorp roo that live together. I had a problem with pecking and most are missing feathers on heads and backs. I posted in BYC and took the advice to expand their area, they were in an indoor coop although a decent size, I...
Thanks for the feedback, currently due to weather and coop construction (which I hope to work on in Spring) I can't get them outside yet. They are in a approx. 12 X 12 ft area at night but during the day, I generally open the door and they have the run of this part of my barn, which give them...
I have 6 RIR hens with 1 black Australorp rooster, they were doing well until about 2 months ago when I started to notice missing feathers. I had a mite problem which has been taken care of (and I monitor closely for any signs of return, so far none). But now I see there is some...
I wanted to post a follow-up question. I have 6 RIR hens and 1 Australorp Roo in a coop about 12 x 12 ft is this enough room ? (I also let them loose outside their coop in the barn during the day), which about doubles the area available. Four of my hens are missing feathers from heads and back...
I had good luck with Ivermectin liquid (I think it's 5%) I got it at Tractor supply. Another poultry site had a great extensive article about treating mites, and this was recommended above a lot of other methods. basically, you 1 cc on the back of the neck and its absorbed thru the skin, if...
Well it's been 3 wks since I treated my roos and hens for mites/ louse; I used permethrin powder to dust the coops, and also spread DE over the floors. I treated each bird twice 10 days apart with Ivermectin. It seems to have worked, I'm not seeing any mites/ louse on the bare areas that haven't...
I have a new question. I read a quite extensive article about Ivermectin, it said that it was very effective and worked like Frontline, it's put on back of the birds neck and when the mites/louse bite they die. This seemed to be an easier way rather than having to dust all the birds. I...
I have a black Australorp rooster with my 6 Rhode I Island Red hens. I noticed he is missing feathers on both side of his back, the saddle area. I checked it out and noticed some tiny mites moving around on the bald area, and there is a healing denuded area , no active bleeding. What would...
Hello all, once again thanks for the feedback. I built a bachelor coop for 5 of our six roosters (27 wks old); they seem to be doing OK, every once and awhile a squabble breaks out, but so far it rarely last more than a minute or so and one retreats. I kept the one rooster (Bob) that seemed to...
Thnx so much for the feedback. We really never intend to breed the chickens (just want egg layers). We planned all along to remove the roos, when they matured. I was hoping maybe to set up a separate coop for the boys, but only if they can get along and not kill one another.
