    Gobble noises--hen? tom? both

They both started gobbling. Celie--We have a lot of wild turkeys. . .a gown hen/tom do not look alike. . .toms have a beard and the tom's wattles are big/Long. We hear wild turkeys regularly, but can't always see what who making the noises. Young wild turkeys all look the same to me...

    Gobble noises--hen? tom? both

TV/Vicki: Thank you both for answering. It's weird. . .we've got a lot of turkey hunters in the family and none of them could answer the question. So far it's just been the one making the gobbling sounds. We're optimistic that we have one male and one female. The one that's making so much...

    Gobble noises--hen? tom? both

Last month we got two heritage turkeys (unsexed) when we picked up our day old chicks. We're raising the turkeys with the chicks on non-medicated game bird grower-starter and all are doing great. These are our first turkeys. I believe one is a royal palm and the other a bourbon. One of the...

    Roosters and Grumpy Neighbors

#1--determine whether or not you are allowed to have roos--if you're not supposed to have them, then get rid of the roos (don't wait for someone to complain) #2--If you can have roos, decide if you want to keep them, then work with the neighbors--sharing eggs is always a nice gesture. (Our...

    Reusable Canning Lids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grrrrrr!! The lids are plastic. This topic really interested me, as we started to can this summer (in a water bath canner-high acid salsa & jams). We are contemplating the purchase of a pressure canner (beans/corn/meat). When looking at the lids, they looked like they are glass (like the...

    Reusable Canning Lids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not used them, but they look most interesting . . . . it appears that you do need to purchase new gaskets on a regular basis. I believe that I'd opt to keep rings on the lids to keep them from getting chipped or knocked off. It's amazing what one can learn about on this website...

I got a hankerin' for deviled eggs, any good recipes?

Here's my basic recipe for deviled eggs. Our family thinks they are good. Boil 15 or 16 eggs if you want 24 egg halves as you're bound to have a couple that won't want to peel or don't slice right. You'll want to taste a couple as you're assembling them. Note that all measurements are best...

Selling your Piglets (Red Wattles): Looking for Advice

Skyesrocket: Thanks for the 4H idea. Do you know if the 4H piglets have to be born between certain dates? I think I saw that a few years ago. I'll try to find our local 4H and see if any of the kids are into pigs. So many at our state fair seem to do chickens or rabbits (less work/less...

Selling your Piglets (Red Wattles): Looking for Advice

We waited for over two years before we finally got piglets. We'd almost given up. This year our Cassie had piglets. It was our first experience and they are so cute! The little piglets are growing up so fast. I have listed them on the Red Wattle site, but it seems to have very few users...

How long will stay "broody" w/o eggs? Will they go "un-broody" on their own?

Mommissan: Thank you for sharing your experiences. We'll try to wait it out and keep a close eye on her. If she starts loosing weight, we'll build a cage. Thanks again. Liz

How long will stay "broody" w/o eggs? Will they go "un-broody" on their own?

Have a broody large fowl black Cochin. . .hatched June '11. . .she's been doing the broody thing for about two weeks. . .we collect eggs daily. . .and take her out and put her by the food/water 2-3 times a day. I searched "broody Cochin". . . ?-will she go un-broody on her own? (I did read...

    "dispatching" & scalding ?'s

GoChick: "Anvil-type" for trimming trees. . .available at most farm stores or hardwear stores. I go through several pairs a year (trimming tree limbs, not on chickens). I've even bought them at "Aldi" grocery stores in the spring when they've got the gardening supplies. They'll usually cut...

    "dispatching" & scalding ?'s

Well, it took almost two months, but we finally got around to sending some of the roos to "freezer camp". Just wanted to thank all of you for encouragement. Hubby/I neither one wanted to do them in, but we all gotta start sometime if we don't want to just give them away for someone else to...
