New layers: some have boxes figured out, some don't

Quick update - looks like everyone has it figured out now! Only one Easter egger left who hasn't laid, I'm sure she'll catch up soon. All these eggs were found in the nesting boxes yesterday and today. Yay girls! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

New layers: some have boxes figured out, some don't

Thanks for the reassurance! This is my first flock so I want to make sure I'm doing things right for them. Had a beautiful brown egg in the nesting box this morning but I'm pretty sure it was another from Cheeto the RSL. No other 'accident' eggs yet.

New layers: some have boxes figured out, some don't

I have 6 girls: 1 RIR, 1 Red Sex Link, 2 easter eggers, and 2 wyandottes. They are about six months old. I have three nesting boxes and a couple of weeks before I expected eggs I added bedding and golf balls to them. The RIR and RSL started laying a few weeks ago, and started right away...

    18 weeks old

I got my first egg from my 23 week old red sex link yesterday. It's been very cold where I am (central Oregon) and yesterday was our first day above freezing in a few weeks. I think she liked it.

    17 weeks old: feed strategy

My 6 girls (and one roo) are about 17 weeks old and have been eating grower feed for a while now. I have 2 silver laced wyandotte, one red sex link, two easter eggers, and two rhode island reds (one of them is the roo). They are not laying yet (though my roo is crowing). I don't get into town...

Those who use DLM - coop AND run? One or the other?

I have the exact same scenario. My chicks are 5 weeks old and I'm getting the coop ready for them. I have a run that is hardpacked dirt, and I've been throwing dry grass clippings in there to build a base. I'll be moving them into the coop shortly, and the coop has a vinyl floor. There are poop...

    Silver Laced Wyandotte sexing

LOL, thanks. The dog got his name by being the biggest and blondest in his litter. The little chick - well, it introduced itself to Thor with a solid peck on the nose so it got the first name of the flock - Loki, Thor's annoying and persistent younger sibling. Funny thing is that the dog gives...

    Silver Laced Wyandotte sexing

Reading through these posts and checking pictures, I think one of my two SLWs is a boy. What do you think? First four pics are of the one I suspect is male, the last pic is the other one for comparison. They're about 4 weeks old. At least 'he' wouldn't need a name change - it is Loki since 'he'...

Two RIR chicks - is one my rooster?

Ha! You know, my chickens all have names that could go male or female EXCEPT for Peaches. The rest are Pickles, Loki, Doodle, Nugget, Snickers, Cheeto, and Mango. In fact, when I named them I said to my husband, "watch Peaches be the only male".

Two RIR chicks - is one my rooster?

I have eight 3 week old chicks. Two are sexlinks, two were sold as RIR pullets, two others as Silver Laced Wyandotte pullets, and two more easter egger pullets. Three of the pairs seem to be developing similarly. But my two RIRs have very different personalities and one is getting a brighter...

    Baby Chick Pictures!!!!! POST!

As a brand new chicken lady who has managed to keep eight farm-store chicks happy and healthy for over 2 weeks, I figured it was time to name them. I love the thread here about naming chicks and found some good ones there. So, here's my little chicken family with their freshly assigned names...

    When to name chicks

I'm raising my first set of chicks and they are about 2 weeks old. I had a theme picked out (I have eight and they were going to be Snow White and the 7 Dwarves), but none of the names seemed right. Only two of them have 'revealed' their name to me so far! So I have a Peaches (a Rhode Island Red...

Preparing my coop for the first time

They did last weekend. RIRs, Wyandotte, Easter Eggers.

Preparing my coop for the first time

Hahaha! Our chicks are from the Big R (or whatever it is called now) in Redmond. I wasn't planning on getting chickens until the spring, after we had time to clean up the property and get it ready for animals, but the husband talked me into an impulse buy last weekend. I normally research the...
