I am about to set my 3rd clutch of eggs and have bought not just one but two incubators. I found that my Brinsea is far more reliable and consistent in temps than the GQF. Both have turners. I have hatched lavender orpingtons, crested cream legbars and cooper marans. The second hatch was polish...
I have brooder envy! I would love to build something like this but hatching chicks cannot be a full time gig for me so I am hoping that everyone makes it outside at some point this Spring/Summer. You live in So Cal, I am originally from there. How many chickens do you think you will eventually...
Update! I awoke to three hatched chicks this AM, they are a day ahead of schedule but they are bantam Polishes so maybe that is why? It is soooo exciting. I have a crazy morning so they will have to stay in the bator until I get back in the afternoon. I hope that is okay!
Hi,
I love this coop and am constructing one just like it--thank you for the inspiration.
I do have a very specific question. Did you paint the roof beams BEFORE installing or after? I just want to know what the easiest thing would be.
Thanks

I am! I have just set 16 bantam Polish eggs with frizzle gene, hopefully. And some Breda eggs arrived today. These batch should hatch on 4/30. I can continue to post updates if anyone is interested.
My first set of hatchings were amazingly successful (for me anyways 10 out of 24) and now I am hooked and have friends who are equally hooked on getting rare breeds that few folks in our area have. I have two incubators, the Brinsea Octo 20 and the GQF Hova bator. I was wondering whether we can...
I just bought the Brinsea brooder and hope to put it to good use for my 10 chicks. I tried feather sexing them today but all the feathers looked exactly alike. Everyone is asleep right now.
Seven chicks have hatched
2 BBS Cooper Marans
3 Lavender Orpingtons
2 Cream Legbars
There are 3 more in the incubator that are pipping, mostly Lavender Orpingtons.
Here is the photo of the seven of the chicks.
I had hoped for just one hatch from eggs from CA to MA in cold weather--mid 20s in March when they were shipped. Now I have 4 from the incubator and 3 that are pipping. When I candled last week, it did not look hopeful at all. I am so glad I just kept the eggs in the Brinsea just in case. I...
