I went outside today to find the legs of my bantam d'Uccle rooster sticking out from under the back deck. It was hard to pull the body back out onto the grass to investigate, and it was clear that something had attempted to pull him under the deck.
Upon further inspection, his neck has been...
Thanks! She is separated now with fresh water and food. I just feel terrible, because she is clearly extremely distressed. Hopefully she gets over it soon!
My Orpington bantam, Pixel, went broody four weeks ago. I managed to successfully sneak some day-old assorted bantams under her in the dead of night, which she happily took to the following morning. While Pixel was sitting, one of my Wheaten Ameraucana hens seemed to sporadically go broody...
I’m feeling super crummy today. I have a broody bantam Orpington that was raising five baby bantam chicks for me (three D’anvers and two “frizzles), but I lost one early this morning due to my negligence. We’ve been having extremely warm weather, and I’m not sure what I was thinking yesterday...
Thanks, Dubrovnik!
She is one of my favorites, for sure! Such a calm, sweet temperament. And she lays the most ENORMOUS eggs! I constantly get double-yolkers from her!
Here she is, full-fledged hen and laying huge eggs nearly EVERY DAY (my best layer):
I adore my Whole Foods hen!
I have an Orpington that has decided to hatch eggs. She's been broody for about three weeks now and is more determined than ever to hatch the eggs she has literally flattened herself over. She had gone broody while I was away for a week, and over that week, grew rather attached to her nest...
This is a cross between an Ayam Cemani and a genuine Blue Wheaten Ameraucana.
In other words, a pretty Easter Egger mutt cross... I'm having a hard time determining whether or not it's a male or female. 4 Months old today.
Any guesses?
I have a flock of fifteen chickens of different varieties. I have been letting them free range without any issues for the past year. I live in a large suburban neighborhood just outside of city limits, so most predators are not a concern. My backyard is fenced, and there are no holes in my...
I'm not sure what breed Reno is... When I called, I was told that they were "White Rock crosses" ... Maybe White Rock and RIR?
They told me over the phone that all of their chickens were white, and sounded kind of confused when I was describing a brown chicken.
So I'm not sure how accurate...
That's interesting, because my Cemani pullet is a total boss. She is my most aggressive bird, borderline bully, but not too bad. She keeps the younger/smaller birds in their places. More aggressive around treats. And I wasn't kidding about the bloody lip, she sliced it open. Outgoing, will jump...
Well, I was correct in guessing the sexes.
The two white chicks ended up being males, and the buff-colored chick ended up being a female.
I kept the female and named her Reno.
I gave away the two males. They grew into fully white roosters, and I'll try to track down some pics...
I'm vacationing this month but can post any pictures I have on this laptop and then more ASAP once I am back home.
Granted, I am not a breeder. Most of my chickens have names (unless I plan on eating them), and I raise them because I simply enjoy it. I do not have the resources (or the time...
