Oh that is cool, but definitely a lot of work! I am sure things will gunk up but I may try a little all-in-one filter just to see. I think my main hope is that if I leave for a weekend I don't have to show my duck sitters how to drain the pool and all :D
That's a good idea! I was thinking of where to build a spot for potatoes and I could certainly bulk up the soil with my deep-litter straw from the coop.
Maybe I should just change this forum post to "Gardening with ducks" lol
It might have been a mix of good pruning and more frequent watering because of the pond, BUT I assert that the ducks fertilized it well with their poop water :yesss:
I have an old sheep stock tank (60-75 gallon capacity, I can't remember which) that I have used as a swim tank for my ducks outside. I live in Montana, where it is pretty dry, but I have an irrigation ditch nearby that I pump water out of to fill the tank for them. I have a drain valve at the...
Thanks! I can't wait for them to be done molting so they look sleeker...
On the other side there is a spigot on the bottom and I have an attached hose to drain it for watering the apple tree nearby. I just open it and let gravity do the work- It's new, so I will have to work out if I need to put...
I knew I had to build something to prevent them from from making everything into mud... A deck is a great idea! I had a bunch of rocks around though and this worked great. It stays pretty clean, aside from molting feathers and the fact it is from my irrigation ditch so high water in the creek is...
My babies celebrating spring around three weeks old...
The first day home! Just a day or two old, my pup was ready to be a dad.
And just yesterday! A little over ten weeks now, they are molting into their full adult feathers and very uncertain of the new pool I built them (they love it once...
I'm holding out on the curly tail feathers to know for sure with mine... The little quacks I hear are always when I am turned away! It's like they know I am curious and wait until I'm not watching.
Mine are just over 5 weeks and I am starting to hear quacks (at least one! hoping more) but in the upcoming weeks I am trying to get it recorded for reference... Overall they are still pretty quiet.
I want to follow this if anyone does have that in video!
Thanks! I think I will probably switch the food and water outside once all the adult feathers are in. We have pest concerns here, but honestly the magpies nesting nearby take care of any spilled food.
I included a recent pic- I will be installing a full fence and revamping the run as I finish...
Here are my ducks outside last week. They love splashing in their pools- their stomachs are adult feathers, with their faces getting that Cayuga green coming in and the rest mottled between fluff and adult feathers. I have heard two different quacks so far! (Same girl? Two girls?!)
I have four cayuga ducklings that are a little over 5 weeks living outside in a refurbished chicken coop. They have a run outside with some cover and small water pools(rubber feeder pans). Inside, I have kept water and food available since they are still growing. I am looking for suggestions on...
I'm curious to follow this too, as I have been thinking about the same thing and like "off the grid" options. I have a goal zero yeti power station with a solar charger I had planned to use for car camping and potentially such things as electric fencing (apiary and orchard protection from...
My temps are similar and I have been setting my ducklings (almost 5 weeks) outside during the day to see how they act. The run around and splash, then preen til dry and lay down huddled up. Maybe it is a little chilly for their age, so I haven't left them outside, but I plan to test them in the...
