I know his thread is very old, but the information on here is great and I was hoping for some advice on a very similar situation I am having with a younger speckled Sussex chick. She is about 3 weeks old and seems to really be having a hard time. I have been scouring the internet trying to find...
I think that should work fine. My coop has a gap under the roof and the hens have been perfectly fine during the winter. We're in NJ so we do get a good amount of snow and cold. Also make sure the ramp board underneath has some kind of 'rungs' or traction of some sort, otherwise the birds will...
That looks like a really cool coop project. I assume the hole in the floor will have a ramp going down to the run below? Will your screen doors have a solid door that closes over top of them as well? That's important to protect them against wind and drafts in cold weather. A good way to provide...
Hi! Congrats on being a new chicken owner. I'm fairly new at it myself, I started with 4 hens about 2 years ago that I raised from chicks, and just recently got 3 more. I can tell you a little bit about our coop/run setup and if it gives you some ideas, great. We have a 12x8 outdoor run that is...
OK update:
I separated the struggling chick from the rest, with her own food/water with electrolytes. Every hour or so I would go in and dip her beak in the water a few times to make sure she was at least getting fluids. She didn't want to eat, but I was able to get a few tiny pieces of egg...
Yes, the bullying is definitely a possibility. I temporarily separated her from the others with her own food and water to see if that helps, but she's still not interested in food. I'm trying to help it along with some yogurt/egg yolk. They are all vaccinated for cocci but I'm not sure about Mareks.
Thanks everyone for your welcome wishes! I am trying everything I can to help out the little one, no real responses on my other posts just yet. I am hopeful nonetheless.
Looking forward to connecting with more BYC friends!
I read in a few other threads that sometimes nutridrench can be effective? I may give that a shot, might be worth it for you too NYCmadness. Anyone else ever go through this or have suggestions?
I have 3 baby chicks that are about 3 weeks old. Up until last night all seemed to be doing fine, except one has been growing much slower than the others. She started to get listless and 'depressed' looking, standing in one spot with eyes closed and pretty much falling asleep standing. Then she...
Hi BYC Folks,
Although I'm new to BYC, I'm not necessarily new to chickens. I started about 2 years ago with a flock of 4 hens- 2 barred rocks and 2 ameraucanas (LOVE their green eggs). I keep them for eggs, but more importantly for gardening company and entertainment! They live in my backyard...
Thanks for your response, I'm going to continue with the electrolytes and probiotics and maybe try some yogurt mixed with her food and see how she does. Obviously I'm keeping a close eye on her, so if the condition gets worse I might opt for the Corid to be safe.
Hi All,
I am hoping someone can help me. I have 3 new baby chicks that are about 3 weeks old. All have been doing fine up until last night - kept very clean, water/food/litter changes daily and they are vaccinated. I noticed that one of them is growing noticeably slower than the others, less...
