About a year ago I bought some six-egg foam shippers and now I can't seem to find the supplier where I purchased them. I have had GREAT results with these shippers and I am about out of my current supply. Does anybody know a good source for buying these shippers? The particular ones I have...
I had the same experience and realized my hen was trying to take a dust bath in the nesting box. I got some ashes from my fireplace and placed them in a box lid inside the coop. Once she figured out what it was, she was in "hen heaven." She rolled around in that box for probably 30 minutes...

I totally agree with your "moral of the story." I guess my opinions have changed a bit because I, too, have learned my lesson the hard way. I have spent many hours and dollars trying to save birds that end up needing special care their whole lives. I have 2 chickens right now that...
As hard as it is, I would cull.
In regard to the comments on this string, Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that having multiple seizures on a daily basis and being blind is living a "normal life." If the bird can't roost normally, that will be difficult for it to stay safe, warm, etc. at...
In looking at the pictures again, are you sure a rooster did that? It looks more like a major scrape, which could have been caused by the bird trying to possibly escape bullying from the other birds and trying to hide underneath something, or possibly trying to get underneath a fence? I don't...
I agree as far as roosters for supper. Sometimes younger roosters will be a bit rough, but I've never seen anything like that.
As far as the wound, neosporin works wonders. I was worried about it being ingested, so I lightly applied a gauze bandage with tape around the edges on the feathers...
A few thoughts on your "confinement" points.
All of your points would depend on the size of the run the chickens are in. In regard to the first point, no matter how "confined" they are, they are still going to eat bugs unless your pen is so air-tight that not even a bug can enter.
If your...
I don't think you should intervene yet. If the baby is still pecking, moving, etc., it's best to just let nature take its course. I would just make sure that it has plenty of humidity and doesn't get too hot under the lamp. Hopefully things will work out fine.
If you put the chicks in the coop with the older birds inside a cage of any sort, make sure that the big birds can't peck through the holes. And, yes, you definitely need a lid. The older birds will basically kill the younger ones if they can get to them.
The floating thing makes perfect sense. Thanks for the article.
I lived in Germany for a while and at the time they didn't refrigerate much of anything. As you stated, they just left their eggs at room temperature. The first time I bought groceries at the local grocery store, I was...
An easy answer is "no". The only time I have ever seen a normally predatory dog NOT attack chickens is if it was actually raised with the chickens from a VERY early age, but that involves raising the dog basically right along with the chickens, actually in the pen with them, which is hard to do...
As I was reading this string, I thought the same thing. So if fresh eggs are hard to peel when boiled, how old do you think store-bought eggs are? I'm not sure I even want to know.
I have quite a few people who buy eggs from me and most of them have learned through time that if they want to...
