I noticed those the last time I was in Tractor Supply. Looked at the chicks and saw a few dead ones. Pointed them out to a nearby employee. She looked perturbed. Later I found out that they had several die over the last few days. They thought it may be the position of the brooders in the...
I didn't have 50 to chase, but chasing the 15 I had was tiring. Couple things to know: Can they easily get in and out of the coop? Mine is too high, they had trouble getting in. Out wasn't a problem, but in was trouble. I had a ramp, but it was too steep. They need an easy way to get in...
I am giving away/selling some of my eggs. I give the eggs and ask that people give a couple dollars as a donation to pay for feed. My customers don't' want dirty eggs, so I started washing them. I fill my sink with cool water and add about half a cap of bleach to the water. I add the eggs...
I got these two hens about 6 months ago. At the time, I had no idea what they were, but they were free, so took them. THe chicks I bought at Tractor Supply. They are about 7 weeks old.
First hen: All black with green iridescent feathers on her back. She has a few feathers on her legs...
For eating purposes? I think a few weeks maybe 3. For hatching, not more than 10 days is what I have read. I could be wrong about that. The eating eggs, I have not ever gone more than a week or so before refrigerating.
It depends (notice that most things with chickens start with "it depends") I have several different breeds living together. Some breeds are more aggressive than others. You can look on this site under breeds to lean more about each breed. That aside, chickens have personalities too. So even...
Different breeds start at different times. Don't use the guidelines posted. Those are averages, your mileage may vary. I bought some Golden Buffs from Meyer ( they are the red sexlink chickens) the literature says 20-26 weeks. Mine took about 6 months before any really started laying...
I beg to differ. Windows look cute, but I don't see the use. You need some ventilation, but you can fix that several ways. I am building a new coop in a couple weeks, pictures to follow. My plan is 12x12, with a slant roof. My current coop has a dirt floor. That is fine. They like to dig...
My friendliest bird is the Buff Orpington. That said, the Red Sex Links I have raised from chicks are pretty friendly too. They come running when I step out of the car or out the door. If they hear or see me, they run to me. They occasionally get out and all I have to say is get home and...
You may have to keep them caged up for a couple days. Eventually one should lay. Then you'll know. I have read that they usually lay on a 25 hr cycle. You could just keep one of the two caged. It won't really bother them too much. Make sure they have access to water and feed.
I 100% agree with you Blooie. I think there are way too many "Nevers" given for raising chickens. There are probably some things you shouldn't do, and they may do better if you don;t do this or that. But, one thing I learned is that these are my chickens and the Chicken Police will not show...
